Project: Dot Portrait
Description: Create a self-portrait composed of identical
marks of contrasting value
Procedure:
Take a large format digital photograph of yourself.
Adjust the lighting to create a well distributed range of
value in the photo.
Bring digital photo into Photoshop and change the the
mode to grayscale and make any exposure adjustments.
Posterize the photo to 5 levels of gray.
Make final adjustments to its value and crop the image
for the final composition.
Bring Photoshop file into Adobe Illustrator and scale and
position on a page 12” x 18”.
Lock this layer in the Layers Palette.
Create another layer.
Determine what kind of mark you would like to incorpo-
rate into your portrait translation: dot, square, letter, or
custom brush/symbol. The mark you use for this assign-
ment could actually be a very small photo of the origianal
image.
Make a grid of marks by duplicating the mark as illus-
trated on the left.
The smaller the mark the more detail your translation will
display.
Change the value for each mark to structure the subject
matter. Strive for an effective likeness.
Print the final work in the production center.
