He was born Alfredo D. Bowman on November 26, 1933, in the village of Ilanga in Spanish Honduras (Spanish Honduras to differentiate it from British Honduras, which became modern- day Belize). Dr. Sebi was a self-educated man. He took cues on being obedient to the procession of life from his beloved grandmother, "Mama Hay." His early days of play and observation by the river and in the forest, coupled with guidance from his grandmother.

Sebi journeyed to the United States as a self-educated man who was diagnosed with asthma, diabetes, impotency, and obesity. After unsuccessful treatments with conventional doctors and traditional Western medicine, he was lead to a traditional herbalist in Mexico. Finding great healing success from all his ailments, he began creating natural vegetation cell food compounds geared for inter-cellular cleansing and the revitalization of all the cells of the human body. Thus, Dr. Sebi dedicated over 30 years of his life to develop a unique methodology inspired by the personal healing experience and knowledge he gained that he began sharing with others which gave birth to the USHA Research Institute, Dr. Sebi LLC, and the Usha Healing Village in La Ceiba, Honduras. Interestingly, in 1988 he faced civil and criminal charges via the New York City Supreme Court for practicing medicine without a license, a jury trial was organized, but he was found not guilty because the prosecution failed to convince the jury that he was making a medical diagnosis based on his concepts on an Alkaline diet that would nurture the cells of the body and activate the body's bio-electric conductivity for healing.

The death of Dr. Sebi on May 28, 2016 in police custody in Honduras after allegedly attempting to launder $37,000 from “complications of Pneumonia” represent unanswered questions about his arrest, level of care while in jail and the overall situation of his death.
