worth of clothing per year from HAWASSA. In total, the government projects that the park could
generate about $1 billion of exports per year.
The park incorporates more than 18km of road, over 21.5 km of electric cable, to 16km of
telecom lines and over 23km of fresh water supply pipelines, also the industry park is mostly
powered by renewable electric sources, with energy and water conservation effort including
natural lightening and ventilation, low consumption bulbs, rainwater recycling and solar powered
led street lights. There is also a zero-liquid discharge facility.it is the first in Africa to purify west
water produced, as well as recover and reuse the salt used in the dying process.

The Hawassa Industrial Park is a cornerstone of the Government of Ethiopia’s ambitious
industrialization strategy. It is seen by the government as a blueprint for further parks in the
country, and it represents the first large-scale investment by “high quality” garmenting firms that
perceive Ethiopia as a frontier destination for their production facilities. Accordingly, the project
has high political visibility in Ethiopia. Beyond its role as a flagship investment destination, the
park represents a significant shock to the local economy of Southern Nations, Nationalities and
Peoples’ Region (SNNPR), and to the national economy of Ethiopia.

CHAPTER TWO
2. OVERALL INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE
2.1 How We Get In To The Company
After receiving an invitation for internship session from HAWASSA industrial park through
coordinators, we took the chance and applied for it. They selected students by giving them an IQ
test. Many students from chemical and electrical engineering took the test. We took the taste with
them and 16 students passed the test from electrical engineering. We were one of them. Next, they
have given us a soft skill training for 3 days that held at RORI Hotel HAWASSA.
The training was organized by collaboration of GIZ, HAWASSA industrial park and HAWASSA
University. It was a great time for us to boost our skills which we use them during the internship
session. Also, it helps us analyze ourselves and figure out our good and poor parts. After that we
get ourselves together to use our good side and to work against our poor side.
Lastly, after the training is over, they spread us in the companies inside the park. EVEREST
APPAREL become our destination and they welcomed us with pleasure and joy and place us to
the department that we belong.
2.1 Section of The Company That We Have Been Working In
There are many departments in our company Everest apparel. Some of them are human resource,
industrial engineering, information technology, General affair, cutting, sewing, ironing, packing
etc. The section that we have been working in was information technology (IT). Our section is a
department which facilitate the production process by providing interconnections in the company
and systems.
2.2 Work Flow of IT Department in Everest Apparel
Most of the systems and connections in Everest apparel was implemented early when the company
was set by Taiwan. IT chiefs from Taiwan designed the systems and interconnection. The main
job of recent IT team that we have been is to maintain the systems and interconnections, also

update them when needed and making them efficient and help the production process of the
company.
Another task that is done by our department is giving other employees a computer training and
update the technological knowledge of the company’s employee. That makes the employees
adaptive to some computer software. Excel, Word, Power point are some of the software that are
given.
Some of the systems and tasks with them are listed below.
AR web - it is a system used to register machines, computers, printers and other electronics. It also
generates an excel file which lists the equipment that are registered.
Figure 5 - Homepage of AR-web machine registration
It also generates a QR code that contains the machine model and its serial number, it is special and
unique for every machine and can be stick to the machine and read using QR reader from smart
phones. By scanning the QR code a person can access the system and see the specific machine.
Our department provide many detailed information about every machine-like manual, videos about
the machine and how they can be repaired and maintained. Computers, printers, hubs, switches,
finger print scanners and other devices which can be identified by their IP address are registered
with their specific IP address.
The task of our IT department is to collect the model and serial number of the machines in the
company and register them on the system and generate QR code for every single of the machine

Figure 7 - Homepage for HR system
It minimizes many papers works in the department to system-based implementation. Some of its
tasks are:
Attendance settlement- controlling the attendance of workers. The company uses finger print
attendance system. Workers scan their finger print when they get in and get out from the company.
There are finger print machines on the gates of each shed that are connected to a hub and send
their data to the server.
Figure 8 - Finger print machine for attendance
The HR system then access these finger print data. The data is used to calculate salaries, to punish
absents and to give bonus for workers with no absent.
Personal change – when the HR department or a worker wants a change in position, department,
shed, line and soon, the system can implement these changes on the worker.
HU DEPARTMENT OF ELECTRICAL AND COMPUTER ENGINEERING – 2019/2 0 12
Payroll calculation and salary change – calculating the salary of each employee using attendance
data, work efficiency, bonus and soon. Also, when there is a salary change it is updated on the
HR system.
Leave work- when workers want to leave work, they have to fill form on permission paper and
submit it to human resource. Then it is submitted to the system.
Other features of the system are annual tax return, new report, second generation health insurance
soon. The main server for this system is found in Taiwan. IT department have a responsibility to
maintain the connection and repair when system fail occur.
U-shape sewing system – this system controls the motion and work status of sewing lines. It
consists 40 sewing operators lined in U shaped format and quality control at the end of each line.
Figure 9 - Shed #50 U-shape system
The machine rotates in a given time interval and stops. It has a bucket attached to it that contains
the products. The operators perform their task in sequence, one step after another. While the
machine rotates the products sewed and updated. Each operator performs each task on the product.
At the end of the line the product meets the quality control section. If it passes this section the next
step will become ironing, but if it fails the quality control it will be returned to repair in to the line.
Each product attached to an RF id that contain the necessary data like product id, product type,
color and at every step of the production line the RF id is scanned and known that it passed that
step. The U-shape sewing system has a display that can show the target output, actual output, the
QC pass, QC fail and total efficiency of the sewing line.
