CIVL272 Engineering Surveying Spring Session MOCK 5
QUESTION 4
(a) Calculate, using either the prismoidal or end areas method, the volume of earth contained in the
following embankment:
Distance (m) 0 15 30 45 60 75 90
Area (m2) 11 42 64 72 160 180 220
(5 marks)
(b) A road is being constructed on the side of a hill. The side slopes are to be 1 vertical to 2 horizontal
in cut and 1 vertical to 3 horizontal in fill. The original ground has a slope of 1 vertical to 50
horizontal and the road is 20 m wide and level.
(i) Sketch typical cut and fill sections for this problem.
(2 Marks)
(ii) Assuming that there are equal volumes of cut and fill, determine the depth of fill or
excavation required at the centre-line of the road.
(10 Marks)
(c) A contour map of an empty mine pit was produced and the following data was tabulated. The
lowest level of the pit is at 250 m whilst the top is at 265 m. There is a flood and the pit fills with
water to the 256 m contour. Determine the amount of water that must be removed.
