TERM 1
DEFINITION 1 Hello!! Im here to talk about looove (tone), one of the greatest emotions you can experience. First things first, what do you think about when I say love? Do you think about something like a perfect relationship, or maybe just that feeling you cant explain in your heart? Love is a strong term; and its considered only to be present when one is really really really attracted to another person. But is that all there is to this strong emotion?? TERM 2
DEFINITION 2 Is love just something that happens naturally by itself? Or is love actually a lie that you tell yourself to conform to what society thinks? Now, love is soon to play a big part in our lives. After your 18th birthday, you become an adult. And when youre an adult, youre independent and can take care of yourself. This opens up a lot of new experiences, one of them being love. Most likely, all of us will encounter strong emotional feelings of love sometime while we are adults. TERM 3
DEFINITION 3 So, you all probably remember that deep thing that Mr Anderson from Perks of Being a Wallflower said; We accept the love we think we deserve. Alright, so lets delve deep into the meaning of this. What this quote is getting at, is that the level of love we will receive is the level of love we think we can receive. So if somebody thinks that they themselves are worthless, well they will never aim to date somebody they might actually deserve. TERM 4
DEFINITION 4 In the same way, if somebody is under the impression theyre like a king or queen, they arent going to love somebody who wont treat them like one. Its all a matter of how much you respect yourself. If you have a sense of self, people will start to respect you and you will start to attract people, and if you dont respect yourself, you wont. That sounds simple yeah? But is that all there is? Nah man. TERM 5
DEFINITION 5 So, lets look at the origin of love. Romantic love is not an archaic relict but an invention in our modern society. In the past, most historical societies did not know love as we do today. Marriages were arranged by the parents and were usually based on mutual sympathy at best. When we say that we love someone, we usually think of being in the steady grip of a strong inexplicable feeling, yeah? But if we think about love being a medium of communication, (pause) thats where it becomes interesting.
TERM 6
DEFINITION 6 How did this thinking come about? Modern society has become very complex and heterogeneous, and is continuing to do so. Specific spheres for specific functional problems are constantly emerging, such as developing of science, our money based economy etc. And at same time while privacy and intimacy has emerged, love is at the centre of this, linking everything together. Love is therefore not a universal experience that has always been part of human love. We tend to think otherwise, however, because of our growing dependence on media. TERM 7
DEFINITION 7 All of this media portrays love as amazing and beautiful, however the majority fail to outline the flaws of love. While love may be leaning towards the positive side, it can effortlessly create hate, which you all know is the opposite of love. Hate can spring from many factors, such as jealousy. So even if some couple seems perfect, just one instance of disagreement can result in an emotional crisis. Thus, although society depicts love as a luxury, it may actually not be. TERM 8
DEFINITION 8 Societys conceptions of love are the reason behind all these failed relationships in the world. Even single people long for the perfect relationships, desperately searching for someone with whom they can spend the rest of their lives. But without the ubiquity of romantic love in our modern society, they might not even feel the urge to be in a relationship. Romantic love is both idealisation and reality- not because it is an archaic mystery, but because it happens in a society full of contradictions, both real, and imaginary.
