mother.” (I 67-69, 72) The women complained to the Goddesses that Gilgamesh “lets no girl go free to her bridegroom” (I 76).

  1. In what ways does Enkidu Change (Tablet 2) Tablet 2 details how Enkidu became clothed and learned how to eat bread and drink ale. “How to eat bread Enkidu knew not, how to drink ale he had never been shown” (II P 90). “His mood became free, he started to sing, his heart grew merry, his face lit up” (II P 100- 105). Enkidu also had his hair groomed and was anointed with oil. (II P 106).
  2. What is Humbaba’s job? Why don’t the elders and Enkidu want Gilgamesh to fight Humbaba? (Tablets 2 & 3) Humbaba is the guardian of the Forest of Cedar. (II 220) Enkidu, who knows Humbaba, doesn’t want Gilgamesh to fight him because “his speech is fire, and his breath is death! An unwinnable battle is Humbaba’s ambush!” (II Y 111-115) The elders said “you are young, Gilgamesh, borne along by emotion, all that you talk of you don’t understand” (II 289- 290). The elders and Enkidu believe that Gilgamesh will die as a result of fighting Humbaba.
  3. Describe Ninsun. (Tablet 3) Ninsun is a goddess and Gilgamesh’s mother. “Ninsun is clever and wise, well versed in everything” (III 17).
  4. Describe Gilgamesh’s dreams (Tablet 4) Gilgamesh’s first dream took place in a mountain valley, when the top of the mountain fell down. (IV 22-25) His second dream was described as “a mountain... it threw me down, it held me by my feet... The brightness grew more intense. A man appeared. From beneath the mountain he pulled me out and he gave me water to drink and my heart grew calm. On the ground he set my feet” (IV Bo 13-19). Gilgamesh then had a third dream. “The dream that I had was an utter confusion: heaven cried aloud, while earth did rumble. The day grew still, darkness came forth, there was a flash of lightning, fire broke out” (IV 100-104). He went on to describe that the fire continued until it started raining heavily, putting the fire out pieces at time. Then there was a fourth dream. “I saw a Thunderbird in the sky, up it rose like a cloud, soaring above us. It was a ..., its visage distorted, its mouth was fire, its breath was death” (IV OB Ni 11-14). He said there was a strange man standing there in his dream. The man took ahold of Gilgamesh’s arm with his wings. His fifth dream, starting at IV Ha 4, began with a wild bull.
  5. What role does Shamash play in the fight with Humbaba? What reasons might he have? (Tablet 5)
