Does Medium have a Negative Impact on Writing? Within the last few decades’ literature experienced multiple changes. Many people argue that these changes are the impact of the technology present nowadays. Whether the medium is improving or deteriorating extensive written media, lately, has been a good topic for a discussion. Some people argue that social networks bring a negative impact not only on writing skills, but on the cognitive abilities as well. Others, however, believe that these networks provide people with the easily accessible source of knowledge. Texting, one of the social networks, is one of the main subjects of the discussion when it comes to writing skills. Many young people find the use of abbreviations very effective in their writing. There have been multiple studies done on whether the abbreviations harm the ability to write or not. Many arguments have been composed on whether texting, in particular the use of the abbreviations, improves grammar and spelling ability. The study that supports the use of the abbreviations states that it is a new genre, and a development of the new language that will bring a tremendous impact on students writing and communication ability. Due to the presence of the variety of technology and medium, extensive written media experiences changes that are improving writing skills as well as destroying some of the former sources of information. The majority of people can agree that technology we are equipped with today play an important part in our lives. Many people cannot imagine their life without cell phone or Internet. How many times do we engage in multiple challenges on how long a teenager can live without a cell phone? Technology has brought many amazing machines and networks into our lives, that at some point, we think, their absence would be a complete disaster. Social network, such as
Facebook, provides the daily news, and at some point decides what news we might be interested in for us. It is proven that social media decides our interests for us. It provides us with the advertisements that would catch our attention by selling our information to different sales companies. Effective communication in the form of writing is crucial in today’s society. Finding a person who cannot write would be almost impossible. Literacy became an important part of education. “Literacy can be defined as the ability to read and write effectively in any language. It is therefore a very important tool” (Olubusola 67). In the past few decades’ literacy experienced multiples changes. Many people argue that these changes are due to the technology and social networks. One of the subjects, critics believe causing literacy to fade, is texting, or the use of mobile phone. Unfortunately, there are not many studies that can prove whether texting is destroying the ability to write or otherwise. The main debate and study of texting follows on the use of abbreviations, what we call textism. It must be pointed out that some have argued that such abbreviations are destructive to language, for example, John Humphrys in Crystal (2008), “They are destroying it (language): pillaging our punctuation; savaging our sentences; raping our vocabulary. And they must be stopped. (Olubusola 77) John Humphrys believes that texting and the use of abbreviations is destroying our ability to compose a grammatically correct sentence with the correct spelling. Other people believe otherwise. “Others have argued that it is only those who are skilled at handling a language who will be able to create and use such abbreviations meaningfully” (Olubusola 77). Many people
Use of electronics helps not only regular students, but those who have disorders as well. One study was done on a 31-year old male who suffers with a language disorder and inability to communicate. This disorder is known as aphasia. From the experiment that was done we can see a clear correlation that the use of cell phone had a tremendous impact on this person’s abilities. The results suggest that orthographic retraining using a cell phone keyboard has the potential to improve spelling knowledge and provide a means to improve functional communication skills. Combined training with both handwriting and cell phone typing should be considered in order to maximize the durability of treatment effects. (Beeson, Higginson, and Risinga 945) There are many studies have been done to help children and adults with disabilities. Studies prove that technology helps to improve the ability to communicate effectively for people with disabilities. There are also many computer programs made to improve the ability to write by engaging in critical thinking. Technology has also brought some negative aspects to former industries that used to provide us with information. With an enormous amount of technology and social networks, printing press experiences a significant decrease. The only source of the information people used to get is no longer the only source. Many people stopped buying and reading newspaper due to a tremendous exposure to the medium. For many Facebook replaced the necessity of the news source. Instead of buying a newspaper, we have to get a subscription on our tablets, computers, cell phones, etc. “The Internet has shifted the balance of power from publishers to advertisers,
who can reach their customers far more efficiently than they could by taking a shot in the dark on expensive print ads” (Kennedy). Most people are no longer interested in reading a primarily new source. Instead, people enjoy reading what bloggers have to say on the issue, or what new advertisements came up. Every day printing press experiencing a drop. Soon enough younger generation will no longer find the use of the printing press, and it will disappear. Technology introduced us with many great innovations and social networks that can truly help people to become more successful in literacy. Text messaging helps to develop the ability to write in a more effective way. It can also help us to learn new words, and become more efficient in grammar and spelling. “Each text message read or sent is an opportunity to develop reading and writing skills” (Olubusola 70). Studies show that text messaging brings a great impact on our writing skills. Even though technology brought so many electronics and social networks, it also effecting other industries. Printing press experiences decrease since technology started to evolve. Unfortunately, many people prefer getting their news from social networks than from a newspaper. Due to this decrease, printing press will no longer be needed with all of the technology we are surrounded with.
