Should there be a line drawn of what is acceptable and what it not when it comes to
plagiarism and self-plagiarism?
In today’s society plagiarism plays a very important role. Most people can define
plagiarism as using someone else’s ideas in one’s own work. There are many definitions on the
matter of plagiarism, but most of them have similar meaning. Self-plagiarism, however, is hard
to define because of its different types. Many people struggle with the understanding why self-
plagiarism is wrong, how exactly to define it, and what is acceptable when it comes to it. Policies
for plagiarism and self-plagiarism differ in almost every college. Because of that student struggle
to define the meaning of plagiarism, and know what consequences can lead to it. Every student
has been introduced to a definition of plagiarism and self-plagiarism, but many students do not
see the importance of it, the difference in those terms, and the rules that follow under those
criteria. Many students struggle of what is acceptable in plagiarism. They believe that
paraphrasing something becomes their own work. By paraphrasing something and not citing the
source they get in trouble not even realizing why. United States is a very diverse county, and
many students from different countries do not understand of the consequences of plagiarism.
Many developing countries do not even have a turn for plagiarism. I am speaking from my own
experience. Growing up in a different county I never knew what plagiarism actually is. When I
had to write a paper, I just copied something from the internet and got an A every single time.
Going to school in the United States taught me to use my own brain and helped me realize that I
can acctially write my own paper without plagiarizing someone else’s thoughts and ideas.
Students need to be educated about plagiarism, and know the difference between many types of
self-plagiarism in order to achieve their educational goals and become more successful in their
writing.

History of the word plagiarism is very interesting and has its own importance. “The word “plagiarism,” in the sense we use it today, first appeared in English in the various battles among Shakespeare and his peers” (Pocock and Rezaeian 29). During that time, authors were able to copy each other’s work and publish it as their own without being punished for that. Many books were published in England at that time. England had a policy for copyright that no one was able to publish someone else’s work anywhere once it was already published in England. In United States, however, people copied each other work and republished it for their own. Many authors, however, did not like that, and wanted to have policies changed when it came to copyright. They did not have the word “plagiarism,” as we do today. Instead, “the word they used was “plagiary,” which is a Latin term for a type of kidnapper or illegitimate slaver” (Pocock and Rezaeian 29). Couple of centuries ago people did not know what plagiarism is, instead that word was used to describe a kidnaping of a child. Today, plagiarism has its whole different and a very important meaning. Knowledge and use of the word “plagiarism” became very important in our society. Nowadays people are very protective when it comes to their work. It becomes very clear when someone else is using their work, or even have the same idea. There are many court cases that follow just under that category. Sometimes it gets to the point when people are overprotective of their own work and they think someone else’s idea is similar to theirs. For example, the recent court case between Disney and Deadmau5 is a good representation of that. Deadmau5 is a singer who wears a helmet in a form of a mouse head. Disney sued the singer because his helmet looked like Micki Mouse head in their eyes. In my opinion, his helmet looked nothing like Micki mouse, and Disney is exaggerating. Disney does not owe the label of a mouse.

he or she writes a different paper on the same topic? Many people in today’s society using self- plagiarism and it does not consider wrong. “Lecturers, raconteurs, standup comics — and politicians — routinely deliver the same material to different crowds, and academics repurpose their work, suitably updated, for different journals” (Wasserman). If people are allowed to use the same information by speaking, why can’t they use the same information when it comes to writing? In science papers self-plagiarism plays an important role when certain concepts have to be repeated in the new work. For example, if a scientist is working on a research and publishes his work, after some time he finds out new things based on that same research why is it so bad to use the same research done by him previously and extended it with more information. There are many types of self-plagiarism and every one of them has a name. It can be very confusing what type of self-plagiarism a person is using since some of them can fall into the same category. “Miguel Roig published a paper in Biochemia Medica with an emphasis on self-plagiarism; he distinguished four types of self- plagiarism: duplicate (redundant) publication, augmented publication, segmented publication, and text recycling. However, cases of suspected self-plagiarism do not always fall into one specific group, and unfortunately, universal rules have not been established for each group” (Supak-Smolcic and Billic-Zulle 150). Self-plagiarism can become confusing when it comes to different types especially when every place has different policy for them. In my opinion, there should be some allowances when it comes to self-plagiarism. For example, I disagree with the policy where a person cannot use his own work to complete or expend his points. Mostly, self-plagiarism is common in the science

and medical fields. I can understand why. Medicine is always changing and expanding. What we thought was a cure for a decease yesterday, might not be so today. People are constantly using their previous information to compare, contrast and expend given information for the public. That is why I think there should be some allowances when it comes to self-plagiarism. Sometimes it can be very beneficial to copy that same material and make something new out of it. Works Cited
