  1. What provides a continuous and important base of power in society? Give an example from the text. Control of economic resources provides a continuous and important base of power in any society. Example from the text; A great deal of power in the United States is centered in large economic organizations—corporations, banks, utilities, investment firms, and government agencies charged with the responsibility of overseeing the economy.
  2. What is economics? What three questions does it decide? Economics is the study of the production and distribution of scarce goods and services. Economics decides the following questions: What should be produced? What goods and services should be produced and in what quantities? How will goods and services be produced? Various combinations of resources—land, labor, capital (factories, machinery, and supplies), and technology—might be used to produce a particular item. For whom will goods and services be produced? Who will consume these products and services? Economists refer to this question as the question of distribution.
  3. What are the three markets in a market system? Three types of market in the market system include; Product market; refers to arrangement that enables people to exchange money for goods, services Labor market; The labor market consists of the decisions of employers and employees to offer

and accept jobs at specified wages. Wages represent the price of labor in the labor market. Capital market; The capital market refers to money made available by banks and other lenders as loans, primarily to business firms but to consumers as well. The interest rate charged by lenders is really the price of money.

  1. What is a mixed economy? Mixed economy refers to an economic system where private market forces and the government both play a role in affecting markets for labor, products, and capital
  2. What is income inequality? Income inequality refers to the gap in the proportion of national income held by the few at the top of the income ladder compared to the many on the lower rungs of the ladder, grew.
  3. What is the federal deficit? What is the national debt? Federal deficit is the annual negative imbalance between revenues and expenditures of the U.S. government, or when the government spends more than it collects in any given year National debt is the total of all annual federal deficits, money owed to others due to borrowing The sum of the deficits plus interest equals the national debt
  4. What is a negative consequence of the debt burden in the US? The federal government’s borrowing “crowds out” capital markets. The less capital available in the private sector, the slower the growth rate of the economy will be.
  5. In the US economy, who decides what will be produced in the US, how many people will be employed, what their wages will be, how goods and services are distributed, and what new products will be developed? Large economic and financial institutions decide what will be produced in the United States and increasingly what will be produced outside of it. They decide how many people will be employed and what their wages will be. They determine how goods and services will be distributed and what new products will be developed.
  6. What decisions – decisions made where – affect our lives as much as those made by government?

Nature and nurture means questions of the relative influence of heredity versus environment on personality, as well as how the interaction between two influence behavior and are part of a larger controversy about the influence of genetics on behavior. There is no single “right” theory of personality, and all can provide insight as to how individuals perceive, relate to, and use power.

  1. How is intelligence related to power? (2 ways) Intelligence matters in power relationships: while not every intelligent person is powerful, intelligence can facilitate the exercise of power over others. Knowledge can be power, as it enables leaders to exercise authority in groups. In addition, there are serious political implications in the nature of intelligence: If mental abilities are primarily inherited, then efforts to equalize education are not likely to be successful. If, on the other hand, mental abilities are primarily nurtured by the environment, then efforts to erase disadvantaged educational environments are worthwhile.
  2. As your text says, early trauma causes children’s brains to have smaller brains than normal with fewer neuronal connections. This in turn leads to language, cognitive, learning, and emotional problems. What impact do you personally think that fact should have on social policies in the US? (For example, on educational policies, welfare policies, criminal justice, family policies?) Addressing the profound impact of early trauma on children's brain development necessitates a holistic approach to social policies in the US. Investment in high-quality early childhood education programs, training educators in trauma-informed teaching methods, and ensuring access to mental health services for affected families are imperative. Additionally, comprehensive parental support initiatives, including adequate parental leave and home visitation programs, can foster nurturing environments. Within the criminal justice system, reform efforts should prioritize trauma-informed approaches for young offenders, aiming for rehabilitation that addresses underlying psychological trauma. By integrating these strategies into educational, welfare, criminal justice, and family policies, society can create a more empathetic and supportive framework, mitigating the lifelong repercussions of early trauma on individuals' well-being.
  3. How can powerlessness “corrupt” the human personality? Powerlessness corrupts the human personality by robbing the individual of a sense of meaning and significance.
  1. What are the five functional forms of power according to psychologist Rollo May? (Hint: One is not italicized in the text.) May’s first form is the power to be The word power comes from the Latin root meaning “to be able.” Power as self-affirmation is the recognition of one’s own worth and significance in life. Power also occurs in everyone’s life as aggression —striking out against a person or thing seen as an adversary. Finally, power occurs as violence. May believes that violence is an attempt to exercise power. It is May’s belief that modern mass society impairs the individual’s self-esteem and self-worth. The feeling of personal powerlessness is widespread: To admit our own individual feelings of powerlessness—that we cannot influence many people; that we count for little; that the values to which our parents devoted their lives are to us insubstantial and worthless; that we feel ourselves to be “faceless others,” insignificant to other people and therefore not worth much to ourselves—that is, indeed, difficult to admit
  2. What does Rollo May believe that much “irrational” violence is the product of? May believes that much irrational violence—for example, riots, assassinations, and senseless murders—is a product of feelings of powerlessness
  3. According to the “Case Study” section, what is mental illness – and what is it NOT? Mental illness is a treatable illness. Examples of mental illness include addiction disorders, Schizophrenia, depression and anxiety disorder. Mental illness is not a character weakness
  4. Psychological disorders appear to vary by ethnicity and gender. What might be the real factor affecting ethnic differences in disorders? How does it affect women and men? Poverty is real factor affecting ethnic differences in disorders. The stress of poverty may precipitate psychological disorders, especially depression among women and alcoholism among men.
