Cactus eater. The long, sharp beak of the cactus ground finch ( Geospiza scandens ) helps it tear and eat cactus flowers and pulp. Seed eater. The large ground finch ( Geospiza magnirostris beak adapted for cracking) has a large seeds that fall from plants to the ground. Insect eater. The green warbler finch ( Certhidea olivacea ) used its narrow, pointed beak to grasp insects.

The Finches

Darwin Wrote…

“Seeing this gradation and diversity in one

small, intimately related group of birds, one

might really fancy that from an original paucity of

birds in this archipelago, one species has been

taken and modified for different ends.”

– Charles Darwin, after learning the finches were

closely related

Formed the basis of Darwin’s idea of

Descent With Modification

Natural Selection Summary

 Differential success in reproduction among

individuals that vary in heritable traits

due to interaction between individual and

environment

 Can increase the adaptation of organisms to

their environment

 If environment changes, can result in new

adaptations and possibly formation of new

species
