Goals for Diagnosing a New Patient

DEFINITION 7 Document treatment progress and alter the course of treatment. TERM 8

Standardized Tests

DEFINITION 8 Designed to categorize clients according to behaviors they exhibit. The numeric scores in the appraisal piece and the fact that this should set patient apart is the diagnostic piece. TERM 9

Nonstandardized Tests

DEFINITION 9 Designed to both gain insight into specific abilities and gauge progress resulting from treatment. TERM 10

Three Main Functions of Assessment

DEFINITION 10

  1. Is there a handicapping condition? 2) What is the etiology?
  2. What will be the clinical focus?

In terms of etiology: what are the historical

events we should be concerned with

Prenatal (problems during pregnancy; 9 months), Peri-natal (couple of hours when mother is in labor/birth; strep b? water break early?), Postnatal (couple of days after birth, still in hospital), Infancy, Developmental (after one month - notice problems as they start to grow and explore) and Adventitious (when child is rapidly growing) TERM 17

Predisposing

Etiology

Results of Evaluation

Prognosis

Statement of professional opinion based on evidence; addresses likelihood of progress with or without treatment. TERM 22

Prognostic Indicators

DEFINITION 22 age, motivation, stimulability, concomitant disabilities, room for improvement, behavior/reactions of significant others, family support and other types of support, length the impairment has existed, and history with treatment/attendance/progress. TERM 23

Prognostic Statement May Be Dangerously

Inaccurate If:

DEFINITION 23 The statement is not based on sufficient clinical evidence. The statement is viewed as an actual prediction of the future. The statement serves as a catalyst for self-fulfilling prophesy. TERM 24

Static Assessment

DEFINITION 24 Like a snapshot. Limited to test results. No attempt to discover how the person responds to clinical teaching. TERM 25

Dynamic Assessment

DEFINITION 25 Insight into the client's response to specific treatment variables. Insight into the client's tendencies and preferences. Determines range of performance. The goal of this is to identify appropriate treatment goals and strategies. Advantages: meaningful recommendations and reasonable starting point for treatment.
