STUDY GUIDE
In preparation for Test #3, study all composers, works and terms in the chapters 26, 29, 32, 35-37, 39, 41-42, 45-47, 51,
53-54. Consider all points of discussion during class as well as concepts from the book. In addition to the written
assignments below, your test will consist of matching, multiple choice, short answer, SHMR analysis and listening
identification questions. For example:
MATCHING
Place a letter in the blank next to a term or composer that corresponds to the correct definition.
1. ___ Arnold Schoenberg A. A period of music that boast imagination and individualism
2. ___ Romantic period B. A 20th-Century composer of atonal/serialism music
SHORT ANSWER
1. Using terminology from the textbook and class discussions, describe in 1-2 paragraphs the stylistic
characteristics one should expect to hear in music of the Romantic period.
PRE-TEST WRITING ASSIGNMENT #1
Write a biographical research paper. You may write on Ludwig van Beethoven, Giuseppe Verdi, Arnold Schoenberg or
Scott Joplin. Structure your paper using the following points:
Describe the composer’s life and career;
Describe the ways in which he contributed to music of the Romantic period (Beethoven or Verdi) or 20th-
Century (Schoenberg or Joplin);
Describe, in general, the sound and style of his music;
Your paper should be 2 pages, typed, double spaced. You will be graded on the accuracy and depth of the material, your
ability to answer the points stated above, organization of the paper, and grammar. Include a bibliography that lists any
sources, print or online, referenced in research or quoted/cited within your paper. Your four-line header must be on the
top right of the first page, single-spaced, and include your name, MUS 114, Dr. Myers, and the test date. Do not include
a title for your paper.
PRE-TEST WRITING ASSIGNMENT #2
Choose any piece – from our textbook or from your own collection – and complete a SHMR analysis. You must list at
least three points for each part of the analysis. Your paper should be set up as follows:

A make-up final exam will be granted only for severe illness or family emergency (documented) and at the sole
discretion of the professor. You must contact Dr. Myers within 24 hours of the final exam to schedule a make-up session.
If you are absent on the day of the test and a make-up test is granted (see your syllabus for the policy on rescheduling
tests), your pre-test writing assignments are then due at the time you schedule the make-up test.
