Phusis/ nomos Scapegoat

Oedipus

Creon: law, order, take it behind closed doors. Protect the

state. Pride, arrogance. Nomos. Does what’s best for thebes.

Doesn’t care about tao, just justice. Does not bend, stiff,

deadly, controlling, strict.

Oedipus: physis, honor, respect, emotional, family ties,

deserts his polis. Kills laius because of emotions. Commits

taboo and make king because of the people. Likes

everything out in the open.

Tirisias : Homors, because always blamed for everything.

But says just follow the system. Don’t try to change fate.

Structure, order, destiny.

Jocasta : nomos. Wants order to be preserved. Cares about

here and now. Hangs herself because she realizes her

marriage is against what was supposed to be. Tells Oedipus

not to look for truth. Ignores the past and wants to move on.

Antigone : phusis. Believes in the tao. Proper burial,

no matter the circumstances. Risks her own life for

her family. Compared to ismene, who didn’t want to

break the rules. She is just like her father, rash and

stubborn. “Only Me’ personality. Bends for society,

unlike creon.

Contrast Athena and Creon.

Creon- bad law and order (harsh). Ignores phusis.

doesn’t bend at all. Leaves the dead unburied

(polyneicies), and the buried undead (antigone).

Athena- good law and order. Embraces the

furies/phusis. Bends for society and justice.

Chorus : wants reconciliation between tao and justice.

Play devils advocate a lot and eventually just want

peace.

Haemon: phusis. Went against his father/law/society,

for his fiance/love/phusis/tao.

Oedipus: takes on the problems of thebes. Famine:

takes into his own hands to find the reason behind the

famine. To find the truth. Takes responsibility for it.

Burden of the city. Search for reason, refusal to give

up, stubborn, didn’t listen to council, trying to go away

from prophecy, becomes real scapegoat. Exiled into

Mt. Cithaeron. Scapegoat just like in the Bible. ( Yom

Kippur). Also, killed his dad.

Creon: assumes pain for the city. Follows laws, order.

Loses son, wife, family. Mental exile. Realized he was

wrong.

Antigone: spiritual scapegoat. Takes on the problem

of the tao being messed up and forgotten in thebes.

Works to bring it back to how it should be.
