Question 1: Do you agree with the author’s claim, “Concrete examples are much more
powerful than abstract descriptions, and they stick to our minds so much better”? If you agree
or disagree, please explain why.
I agree with the author’s claim, because usually an history or anecdote has more impact on the
memory of the people, we use to remember better histories with characters, place and time.
When a concept is hard to understand or abstract, sometimes we have to read a lot about it
and reread many times. Abstracts concepts explain with an example are easier understand it.
Question 2: Will you please tell me about an experience in your life where an example help you
learn a particular life-lesson, a concept, idea, or a skill?
When I was learning to drive, I have to take a theoretical course when they explain to me all the
concepts and theory to drive. However, I finished the course and the concept of driving was still
very abstract for me. Then, I began to practice with my father in his car. He drove first
explaining step by step what he did while driving. After that, I understood how he was driving
and I began to practice. This is how I learned to drive. I understood better how to drive after I
saw an example of my father.
Question 3: Suppose you are a doctor, and your patient has a malignant tumor in his stomach.
It is impossible to operate, but unless the tumor is destroyed, the patient will die. A certain kind
of X-ray treatment provides see hope. If the X-rays are beamed at the tumor in such, way that
they hit it all at once and at a sufficiently high intensity, the tumor will be destroyed.
Unfortunate, the healthy tissue those high-intensity rays pass through on the way to the tumor
will also be destroyed. At lower intensities the rays are harmless to healthy issue, but they will
not affect the tumor.
Question: What type of procedure might you use to destroy the tumor while at the same time
preserving the healthy tissue?
As a doctor, I might use the X-ray treatment but using lower intensities repeatedly. In that way,
the rays will be harmless to healthy issue but constant rays to low intensity could impact the
tumor and subsequently destroy it.
