Family Portrait Paper
One of the major aims of maternal-child nursing is to provide professional, quality care
that fosters family unity while maintaining physical safety of the childbearing unit. To
enable you to more readily identify factors affecting your patient’s family, it is helpful to
identify how these factors affect your own family. Describe your own immediate family
in relation to the factors listed below. You will not be evaluated on the content of the
paper, but on the completeness of it. If there is an area that, for some reason, you feel
you cannot share, just state that you wish to not discuss this particular area. Do not just
leave out that section or points will be deducted. This paper will be worth 5 points. The
paper will be due at the end of the second full week of school.
Include the following information in your narrative:
1. (0.5 pt) Family structure (e.g., father, mother, sister, etc.) Include the age of
parents in relation to age of children and time span between children.
Also include your position in family (middle, oldest, etc.).
2. (0.5 pt) Education of parents and how it influences the children.
3. (0.5 pt) Spiritual beliefs.
4. (0.5 pt) Socioeconomic factors (including any chronic illnesses).
5. (0.5 pt) Attitude toward sex education, medical care/preventative care.
6. (0.5 pt) Cultural implications (including language, traditions, etc.).
7. (0.5 pt) Problem areas of you or your parents adapting to parenthood.
8. (0.5 pt) How you feel about a) pregnancy, b) childrearing, and c) menopause.
9. (0.5 pt) Expectations you have of your/a mate.
10. (0.5 pt) How you think any/all of the above factors may influence your experience
in maternal-child nursing.
11. Any other factors you feel are significant that are not addressed above.
