DEFINITION 1
In 509 BCE the city became a res publica, a state w/out a
monarch. Ruled by the combination of the Senate (upper
class) and the citizens. The goal of the Roman Gov't was to
achieve balance between the two consuls who held veto
power. Collected taxes and held other government jobs.
