Instructor: Alice Earl Final Paper: Research on Watergate Event Watergate Event “Watergate” is the name of a hotel located in Washington D.C. where the historical Scandal with United States 37th^ President, Richard Nixon accorded. The term “Watergate Event” has been used to describe the complex timeline of events that accord between 1972 and1974 that transpired at the Watergate hotel which is why the scandal is known as the “Watergate Event”. While doing this research I wanted to learning more about the history of the Watergate Hotel, President Richard Nixon career, the scandal, how the United States Legislator handled the event and how this effected the American people. I believe The Watergate Event is the devastating historical event that plays a major role in the distrust of the American people with the United States Government. Watergate hotel was built in 1971.It is actually a part of a cluster of 6 buildings in Foggy Bottom area of Washington, D.C. covering 10 acres of land. “The buildings include: three cooperative apartments buildings, and two office buildings, one of which is where the Watergate scandal accord. The entire 6th floor of one of the Watergate Office buildings housed the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee in 1972. As found on Wikipedia the “Watergate Office Building (2600 Virginia Ave NW) is the office building where the Watergate burglary happened” (Wikipedia 2017). Richard Nixon was the United States 37th^ President, the first and only President to resign from office. Nixon had a long political career where he served eight years as Vice- president under President Dwight Eisenhower. In 1960 he ran for office as President and lost to John F Kennedy. In 1968 he was elected by the Republican party as their candidate and after 2

Instructor: Alice Earl Final Paper: Research on Watergate Event among the Watergate burglars, Former attorney general John Mitchell, head of the Nixon reelection campaign, denies any link to the operation. August 1 - A $25,000 cashier's check, apparently earmarked for the Nixon campaign, wound up in the bank account of a Watergate burglar. In 1973 , January 30 - Former Nixon aides G. Gordon Liddy and James W. McCord Jr. are convicted of conspiracy, burglary and wiretapping in the Watergate incident. Five other men plead guilty, but mysteries remain. July 23 - Nixon refuses to turn over the presidential tape recordings to the Senate Watergate Committee or the special prosecutor. December 7 - The White House can't explain an 18 ½-minute gap in one of the subpoenaed tapes. 1974, April 30 - The White House releases more than 1,200 pages of edited transcripts of the Nixon tapes to the House Judiciary Committee, but the committee insists that the tapes themselves must be turned over. July 27 - House Judiciary Committee passes the first of three articles of impeachment, charging obstruction of justice. August 8 - Richard Nixon becomes the first U.S. president to resign. Vice President Gerald R. Ford assumes the country's highest office. He will later pardon Nixon of all charges related to the Watergate case.” According to People-Press.org article published November 23, 2015 “The public’s trust in the federal government continues to be at historically low levels. Only 19% of Americans today (2015) say they can trust the government in Washington to do what is right “just about always” (3%) or “most of the time” (16%)”. The erosion of public trust in government began in the 1960s they could trust the federal government to do the right thing nearly always or most of the time reached an all-time high of 77% in 1964. Within a decade – a period that included the Vietnam War, civil unrest and the Watergate scandal – trust had fallen by more than half, to 36%.” It is evident that the American People has a distrust on our Government. Does not help when we have events like the impeachment of President Bill Clinton

Instructor: Alice Earl Final Paper: Research on Watergate Event in 1998 and the 2016 election that took many by surprise! In the biggest political upset of our lifetime, the electoral vote elected Donald J. Trump to lead our nation. The Watergate Event leads the way to cause the American people to lose faith in the presidency and it has not improved since. I would imagine for the polls of that followed right after Nixon had Americans examine the candidates like never before. As Americans went to the polls the memories of Watergate went with them and they questioned whether history would repeat itself. It is with great doubt that I believe we will ever recover our faith in our presidency. Work Cited References: Wayback Machine. July 3 rd, 2017.
