empowering the individual by promoting physical activity, exercise, movement awareness and functional movement by connecting physical and mental aspects and based on the available scientific and best clinical evidence. Physiotherapists are in a good position because they have specific therapeutic skills, an up-to-date knowledge, and a unique expertise in both a person’s body and a person’s body in movement, two important issues integral to psychopathology.
With additional and specialized education focused on mental health and psychiatry, physiotherapists in mental health and psychiatry can offer a rich variety of interventions related to the physical and mental health problems. There are different ways to manage the patient, depending on the patient’s personality, mindset and moment in their lives in order to make the treatment effective for the needs of the patient.
In 2017 in Reykjavík, the subsection Physiotherapy in Mental Health from the Colombian Association of Physiotherapists became member of the IOPTMH. Since then, the subsection showed an enormous energy and they developed different activities to convince colleagues of the importance of mental health in the field of physiotherapy. One of their new initiative is this first Spanish book with the title Fisioterapia en salud mental.
Besides the political issues of mental health in Colombia, community care, the history of physiotherapy in mental health, this new book illustrates two important cornerstones: the body and mental health and physical activity and exercise and mental health.
In mental health, body image distress and disturbance (i.e. body image disturbances of delusional proportions, disturbances in perception and an overwhelming sense of personal ineffectiveness) are a central theme across different disorders. Physiotherapists in mental health have some skills to help patients to become more familiar with and aware of their senses, their body and their movement. The book section 3 offers the reader important information about the existing physiotherapy approaches related to these topics.
Nowadays, there is a consensus that physical activity and exercise are crucial in daily life. Besides the positive physical health effects, exercise also has important psychosocial effects (improving feelings of wellbeing, the enhancement of self-confidence, amelioration of quality of live) and prevents and reduces symptoms in a broad range of mental health conditions. At the same
time, our society is confronted with new health issues due to a lack of exercise such as an increasing sedentary behavior and mental illnesses. In Section 4, this topic is discussed in depth.
Other key elements of physiotherapy in mental health are the stress and tension regulation (including relaxation) and touch, closeness and massage, aspects that are associated with an increased sensitivity and intimacy.
This book is an eye-opener and an important contribution, not only for physiotherapists but also for policymakers. It opens a window to evidence and clinical based practice that should be applied by physiotherapists specialized in the psychiatric and mental health field.
Physiotherapy is a rough diamond. Physiotherapists working in mental health need continuously to bring their “Unique Selling Points” into the spotlights. Finally, I suggest next quote, based on my long clinical experiences in mental health, as reflection. “Physiotherapy in mental health is not always finding a solution; it is about helping patients to start a dialogue with their body”.
