VC 251 Week 8 Final Project: Digital Image Enhancement and Printing - Prof. Peter L. Hoelt, Study Guides, Projects, Research of Communication

The requirements for the final project of vc 251, a digital imaging course. Students are required to select five digital images, improve their appearance using various techniques such as color correction, unsharp mask, and surface blur, and prepare them for offset printing by separating them into cmyk channels and creating an indesign layout. The document also includes instructions for creating a grayscale image and a 2-color duotone, as well as guidelines for the print layout.

VC 251 :: Week 08 1 of 1 18 November 2008
— Final Project —
project::final
Assignment ::
Select five digital images—either from your existing photo library, or new images shot for
this exercise—and improve them using the skills and techniques learned in class. As a final
step, prepare them for offset printing by separating them into CMYK, create an InDesign
layout comparing the images, and print it on the VC color printer. Document the steps you
take for each image, and present them as part of your layout.
Requirements ::
For four of the images, improve their appearance using any or all of the following
techniques. Only select the techniques that work for the image you are working on.
Color correct the image in either RGB or LAB, improving the overall
appearance of the image.
o Adjust the R, G, and B channels separately to improve contrast and color
balance in an image
o Steepen the a and b Curves to increase saturation
o Steepen the L Curve to maximize tonality across the entire image.
o Steepen the RGB or L Curves at the main point of interest, if necessary.
o Adjust the a and b Curves independently to highlight one color range over
another.
o Adjust the a and b Curves to remove apparent color casts in an image.
Use Unsharp Mask to sharpen the appearance of an image.
Use Surface Blur or Dust and Scratches to eliminate noise in the a and b
channels, if necessary.
Complete additional (or primary) color correction in CMYK color mode,
retaining Adjustment Layers when possible.
Prepare the images for printing on a web-fed press using coated paper.
Separate the images, converting them into CMYK. Select a Black Generation
method appropriate for the image, taking into consideration image content
(is the image primarily neutral?).
Sharpen the Black channel, if necessary.
For the fifth image, convert it to Grayscale, then into a 2-color Duotone using the
techniques taught in class.
Convert the image to Grayscale using Photoshop’s new Black & White
option, the Channel Mixer, or by using existing channels (RGB, CMYK & LAB
channels). Maximize black/white contrast in this image.
Create a 2-color Duotone. The colors can be any of your choosing.
Do not separate the Duotone image—save it as a Photoshop EPS file for
placement into InDesign or Illustrator.

For four of the images , improve their appearance using any or all of the following techniques. Only select the techniques that work for the image you are working on.

• Color correct the image in either RGB or LAB, improving the overall appearance of the image. o Adjust the R, G, and B channels separately to improve contrast and color balance in an image o Steepen the a and b Curves to increase saturation o Steepen the L Curve to maximize tonality across the entire image. o Steepen the RGB or L Curves at the main point of interest, if necessary. o Adjust the a and b Curves independently to highlight one color range over another. o Adjust the a and b Curves to remove apparent color casts in an image. • Use Unsharp Mask to sharpen the appearance of an image. • Use Surface Blur or Dust and Scratches to eliminate noise in the a and b channels, if necessary. • Complete additional (or primary) color correction in CMYK color mode, retaining Adjustment Layers when possible. • Prepare the images for printing on a web-fed press using coated paper. — Final Project —

Print Layout ::

In addition to turning in your digital files, you will need to create a tabloid-sized (11" x 17") layout for each image. Each page must contain the following items:

• Both the original image and the final, corrected image. These should be at least five inches tall, and they should both be the same size. • Each individual CMYK channel, printed in their own color. (Cyan should print in cyan; Magenta in magenta, etc.). To do this, simply create four versions of each image, and delete the channel information in the three un-wanted channels. • A written account of the steps you took to modify the image. Include which controls in Photoshop you used, as well as what numbers you entered in the dialog boxes. • For the Duotone image, only simple grayscale versions of the channels are necessary. Convert the Duotone into a multi-channel image, delete the unwanted channel, and save it as a grayscale TIFF. • Here is a basic sample layout:

• Design and aesthetic appeal of your layout and presentation will be graded. • The final product should be printed on the VC color printer.

Deliverables ::

Turn in your final, printed photo comparison, your original images, your in-progress adjusted files (with layers in Photoshop), your final, CMYK TIFF images, and your InDesign layout with the supporting files to the instructor’s Drop Box on the XServe (XServe > Class Folders > VC 251 > Drop Box). The final project is due at the beginning of class on Thursday, December 4th, 2008 (Week 10). Be prepared to discuss your project experience with your fellow students and the instructor during the class session.

This project is worth 100 points.
