Forensic hyp ● Forensic hypnosis is the use of hypnosis in the field of law enforcement. ● Forensic use of hypnosis is often used to help witnesses recall events and descriptions of suspects that normal memory recall cannot. Hypnosis ● An altered state of consciousness during which an individual demonstrates heightened susceptibility to suggestions or commands of the hypnotist. ● The subconscious regulates your bodily sensations, such as taste, touch and sight, as well as your emotional feelings and the storehouse of your memories. ● Forensic Hypnosis: an investigative memory retrieval technique used to enhance recall in legally relevant situations. Purpose of forensic hypnosis There are basically two purposes for using forensic hypnosis. ● The most common purpose is to induce relaxation when anxiety and stress may be obstructing a witness's ability to recall as much information as possible. ● The second use of forensic hypnosis occurs when retrieval of information from witnesses cannot be acquired through any other means. Procedural guidelines ● Qualified expert ● Independence ● Recording of information ● Pre-hypnosis gathering of facts ● All contact must be recorded ● No other person should be present during the session Susceptibility Hypnotic susceptibility measures how easily a person can be hypnotised.
Phases of forensic hypnosis ● Pre-hypnosis interview ● Induction ● Information eliciting ● De-hypnotise ● Post-hypnosis interview Advantages ● Enhance memory of a witness or victim of a crime due to traumatic events. ● To help the witness or victim with poor memory to recall information. ● Induce relation by eliminating stress and anxiety that often obstruct memory retrieval. ● Can be used when there is no possible means of obtaining information. Disadvantages ● Reliability and accuracy of the information obtained. ● The creation of pseudomemories can lead to mind manipulation.
