Formal Paper Explanation and Outline: SPC 1300
This paper should be typed and follow a 5 paragraph essay format – although there may
be more than 5 paragraphs!
You should have read all the chapters but especially 10 (11) because it specifically deals
with conflict, which is the subject of your paper.
The paper will not deal with an intra-personal conflict. (This is a conflict that happens
inside your own head i.e.: not being able to make a decision) It must deal with an
interpersonal conflict, which is between two people.
You may use a conflict in your own life from the past or one that is current. OR you may
use a conflict that you have closely observed (between your good friends or family
members)
Look at the conflict as it is now (or was). Choose three interpersonal concepts (topics),
things you have learned about interpersonal communication, and explain what is
happening now in the conflict in relation to these concepts. For instance you may choose
self-concept, listening, and defense mechanisms. How is each person’s self-concept
aiding in this conflict? How is each person’s listening aiding in this conflict? How are
each person’s defense mechanisms aiding this conflict? You are doing a diagnostic
analysis of what is happening and why based on what you know about these three
interpersonal topics or concepts.
Next, you will describe how if you, and or they, applied the skills or new knowledge
about the interpersonal concepts you have chosen, how would the conflict change or have
changed? For example, you chose self-concept as one of the concepts to analyze this
conflict with - what new knowledge or skill did you learn about self-concept, if that had
been applied to the conflict, would have changed the conflict and how? Do the same
thinking and application with the other two concepts you chose.
The paper should have 5 parts I will explain what should be in what part.
1. Introduction. The background as to who is involved with the conflict and a vague
idea of what is happening. (how long the conflict was, who was involved, when
did this happen etc.) Your thesis sentence should name the three interpersonal
concepts you chose to analyze this conflict with.
2. Paragraph one in the body. This paragraph will show the conflict through what
was happening in regards to the first concept chosen (in the example above self-
concept was the first concept chosen - You will explain in detail what each
person’s self-concept was and how those concepts were affecting the conflict)
Then apply the new knowledge or skill learned about that concept to show how
the conflict might have changed had the new knowledge or skill been applied.
3. Paragraph two of the body follows paragraph one in form only deals with the
second concept chosen. In the example above you would talk about what listening
