DEFINITION 1
wasused in Isabella d'Este, Marchesa of Mantua's studiolo.Also in
the studio were several paintings by C orreggio including the
"Allegory of Vice" and "Allegory of virtu e." She was a great lover of
antiques.Intarsia is a form of wood inlay ing that is similar to
marquetry.The term is also used for a similar technique used with
small, highly polished stones set in a m arble matrix.

Primavera
DEFINITION 2
painting by sandro botticelli commissio ned by Lorenzo di
Pierfrancesco de Medici to commem orate his marriage. Mercury is
shown prodding the swirling mists abov e while three graces dance.
Next to the three graces is the "virg in Venus." Zephyr is about to
rape Cloris. All of these stand as meta phors for submission of the
bride to her husband on their wedding night.
TERM 3
Camilla and the Centaur
DEFINITION 3
This was also commisioned by Lorenz o di Pierfancesco de Medici. It
shows the Greco-Roman myth of Ca milla taming the lustful
centaurs. In the actual picture, Cam illa is christianized and
virginized as she tames the centaur. This is a metaphor for the
wife to retain her virginal dignity throu ghout her marriage and to
satisfy/tame her husbands lusts taste fully.

Arnolfini Portrait
DEFINITION 4
The Arnolfini Portrait is an oil painting o n oak panel dated 1434 by
the Early Netherlandish painter Jan v an Eyck. It depicts the the
husband on the right, towards the win dow, and the bride on the
left, towards the bed. The bride is sub missive as she looks down
and holds her hand out to her husban d only. Her bunched dress is
a symbol of fertility. Basically, the paint ing shows that the wife's
main purpose should be in the bedroo m, procreating with her
husband. Meanwhile, the husbands b usiness should be in the
outside world until he must come hom e and try to impregnate his
teenage bride.

Michelangelo Buonarotti
DEFINITION 5
did "TEMPTATION AND EXPULSION" on the sistine chapel.
Was very controversial because,for once, the blame of the
fall of man was not placed on eve alone. Adam aggressively
reaches for an apple while Eve is passively sitting and
reaching up for an apple from the blond snake.

DEFINITION 6

female artist during the time of Michelangelo that was

praised by Vasari himself. Most known for "Chastity of

Joseph" a sculpture on the facade of a church. Most

interestingly enough, she was a sculptor herself, which was

at the time considered to be an art only males dominated.

Among furniture in Italy, a cassone is a rich and showy type

of chest, which may be inlaid or carved, prepared with gesso

ground then painted and gilded. Used during the Renaissance

times as a marriage chest for the husband and wife.

Giorgio Vasari

DEFINITION 9 Giorgio Vasari (30 July 1511 - 27 June 1574) was an Italian painter, writer, historian and architect, who is today famous for his biographies of Italian artists, considered the ideological foundation of art-historical writing.Wrote about Properzia di Rossi. Praised her condescendingly for her skills as a sculptress by continuously mentioning her dainty tender hands. TERM 10

virginity

DEFINITION 10

A virgin originally meant a woman who has never had sexual

intercourse. A woman's virginity was her most important

asset in marriage. Virginity was prized above all other

virtues. Even the beauty ideals of the time served to

reinforce purity in the women's lives. High forehead, pale

skin, blond hair, and pearls all symbolized a woman's

virginity.
