DEFINITION 1 wasused in Isabella d'Este, Marchesa of Mantua's studiolo.Also in the studio were several paintings by Correggio including the "Allegory of Vice" and "Allegory of virtue." She was a great lover of antiques.Intarsia is a form of wood inlaying that is similar to marquetry.The term is also used for a similar technique used with small, highly polished stones set in a marble matrix. Next to the three graces is the "virgin Venus." Zephyr is about to rape Cloris. All of these stand as metaphors for submission of the bride to her husband on their wedding night. TERM 3
DEFINITION 3 This was also commisioned by Lorenzo di Pierfancesco de Medici. It shows the Greco-Roman myth of Camilla taming the lustful centaurs. In the actual picture, Camilla is christianized and virginized as she tames the centaur. This is a metaphor for the wife to retain her virginal dignity throughout her marriage and to satisfy/tame her husbands lusts tastefully. TERM 4
DEFINITION 4 The Arnolfini Portrait is an oil painting on oak panel dated 1434 by the Early Netherlandish painter Jan van Eyck. It depicts the the husband on the right, towards the window, and the bride on the left, towards the bed. The bride is submissive as she looks down and holds her hand out to her husband only. Her bunched dress is a symbol of fertility. Basically, the painting shows that the wife's main purpose should be in the bedroom, procreating with her husband. Meanwhile, the husbands business should be in the outside world until he must come home and try to impregnate his teenage bride. TERM 5
