The conventional definition of health being the absence of any manifestationof disease and believing that health is astate of complete physical , mental andsocial well-being, Islam deems this tobe a necessary component of faith andof islamic law, which Moslemsimplemented during their golden ageand in so doing provided evidencesupporting its applicability.
To keep optimum health we have toensure proper diet and nutrition.The holy Prophet Muhammad says:“Stomach is the home of disease. Dietis the main medicine”.Sahih Muslim
Nutrition doesn’t mean just physicalnutrition. Nutritional needs are ofthe SOUL, of the MIND and lastly ofthe BODY
Islam has laid down the foundation inQuran and Sunnah for the bestapproach of of balanced health. Thisapproach is mainly through selectionof the best, preventive methods, andstaying away from harmful things.Summary of the main ideas of Islamrelating to nutrition and health ispresented in the following slides:
1 - Allah asked every one to eat what islawful. Allah says in surah Al-Baqarah(The Cow) :
“Ye people eat of what is on earth lawful and wholesome”
(Quran 2:168)
2 - Muslims are to eat the best food afterselecting. Allah says in Quran in surahAl-A’raf (The heights)
“Eat and drink , but waste not excess, for Allah loves not the prodigals” (Quran7:31)
5 - In another approach, Islam demandsfrom its followers the idea of totalAbstinence of food and drinks for onewhole month from dawn to sunset.Fasting increases productivity and curbsinflation. Allah says in the Quran inSurah Al-Baqarah (The Cow):“ O ye who believe! Fasting is prescribedfor you as it was prescribed for thosebefore you, that ye may learn selfrestraint.” i.e. to have Taqwa
With regards to fasting, the prophetMuhammed (PBUH) said:
“ fast (the month of ramadan) so as
to heal your bodies from diseases”
