M eet Alina Starkov, a pale and scrawny teen mapmaker/orphan. Until she catches the eye of the Grisha (the ?magical elite?) who claim that she has a strong power that can save the world. Alina - a pretty average teenager who?s been ignored or looked down upon her entire life - is now the bright light of hope for all of Ravka to see. T he ?Shadow and Bone? trilogy was a hidden gem until recently, when it started gaining more attention. I thought it was a great gate- way into the YA (young adult fiction) world since it shares many similarities with popular YA themes/topics (magic, unbreakable bonds, war, etc.). Among the many wonderful things in this book, my two favorite things in this book were that 1) I felt that many teenagers (myself included) could relate to and connect with the characters. N ot only do the character(s) have huge burdens placed on their shoulders, but no one to talk to or trust. 2) M y other favorite thing about this book is that the characters aren?t perfect, they make mistakes. Every single one of them has a flaw that makes them more human. Overall, M rs. Bardugo did a phenomenal job of creating these characters.
