Introduction: The village of Grange was surveyed in 1878 on a portion of 390 acres originally owned by explorer Captain Charles Sturt whose home The Grange' is included in this tour The land was bought^ by Arthur^ Harvey, David Murray and John Brodie Spence — the 'Grange Proprietors' — who were responsible for developing the area and for building the jetty, Grange Hotel and The Marines. They also built and initially operated the railway from Woodville to Grange.
1. Grange Jetty Opened in 1878, the 1,000 feet long jetty was built of jarrah by the Grange Proprietors, the group responsible for the development of Grange. 2. Grange Hotel An advertisement in the South Australian Register on 20 May 1882 announced "The Grange Family Hotel is now open and offers superior accommodation to families and others." Significant alterations and additions have occurred down the years but some of the original structure can still be seen. 3. The Marines Designed as a row of 24 luxury three-storey terraced houses, each of 11 rooms and a frontage of 25 feet, only eight were completed at an estimated cost of £1,050 each in 1883. Mr Arthur Harvey was the first buyer, purchasing No. 1 Marine Terrace (at the southern end). 4. Terminus Street In 1883 the Grange Railway & Investment Co. Ltd (GR&IC) opened a railway from Woodville which terminated at the western (sea) end of Terminus Street. GR&IC was liquidated in 1886 and the line was bought by the government (South Australian Railways) in 1893. 5. Military Road After the 'Russian scare' of 1882, the government mounted two brass cannon at Glenelg (near the mouth of the Patawalonga) and Military Road was constructed to connect this 'battery' with Fort Glanville and Fort Largs to the north. A temporary railway was laid from Glenelg (St Leonards) to Grange to assist with building the road through the difficult sandy terrain. 6. Old Grange Railway Station Only the platform of the old station, in use for 92 years, remains. In 1894, when the line was extended to Henley Beach, the station was relocated here from Terminus Street. Although the extension to Henley closed in 1957, it was not until 1986 that the present station on the eastern side of Military Road was built. 7. St Laurence's Court The original house on this property, 'Brig House', was built in the early years of the 20th century for Mr & Mrs F.J. Fisher. In 1945 it became the Lady Norrie Junior Red Cross Home and in late 1949 was purchased by the Anglican Church for the development of an aged-care facility operated by Anglicare SA. 8. Old Grange School From 1881-85 the school was conducted in the Baptist Church (Site 10). In October 1885 the school moved into its own building where classes were held until December 1982. The new building on the southern side of Jetty Street was opened in 1971. 9. The 'Grange' Built in 1840, was the home of Captain Charles Sturt, one of Australia's Great Explorers. Captain Sturt discovered the Darling River, followed the Murray to the sea and led an expedition into Central Australia. He held several important positions during the formative years of the Colony of South Australia including Surveyor-General and Colonial Secretary. 10. Baptist Church This is the oldest church in the area. The foundation stone was laid on 9 November 1880 and the church opened for worship on 20 February 1881. (Grange School classes were held here from 1881-1885). The church was built on land given by the GR&IC. 11. Old Cottages Nos. 23 and 25 on the south west corner of Beach Street and Wilson Court. These semi-detached cottages once served as an overnight stopping place for bullock wagons travelling between the Brighton Cement Works and Port Adelaide. 12. Uniting Church The foundation stone was laid by Mr Edwin Davey on 11 March 1911. (Look for the two memorial tablets on the later structure). 13. St Agnes Church The foundation stone was laid on 1 August 1885 and the first stage of the building was dedicated three months later. The land was also given by the GR&IC. The church proper was completed in 1901 but the vestry was not added until 1935; the adjoining parish hall was built in 1924. 14. General Store & First Post Office The first Grange post office opened in July 1881 in this building, then a general store conducted by Mr Charles Marrett who was postmaster from November that year. 15. Grange Hall & Institute The hall, built at the instigation of Mr Charles Marrett, was opened in December 1898 and a library annex was added on the west side in 1908. A small private school was conducted here for about 30 years from 1904 and the building was used by many local organisations until 1963 when the library moved from the annex into the main hall. 16. Old Scarfe Home Originally built around 1912 as a summer residence for Mr & Mrs Frederick Scarfe (of Harris Scarfe & Co. Ltd) at 451 Esplanade, the house is an example of the work of young architect E Kenneth Milne, who also designed the Adelaide Oval scoreboard. The house remained in the Scarfe family until 1935. 17. Nautilus Built by Michael Kerrison, licensee of the Grange Hotel ca 1916, this attractive home was owned for many years by the Dring family, well known in transport and horse racing circles.
Return to starting point by walking north along Esplanade.
