Interesting Facts:

  • The Incas believed that gold was the sweat of Inti ( The God of the Sun) and believed that it contained same regenerative powers as the sun.
  • First golden jewelery is believed to be first made in 2600 B.C by the ancient Mesopotamians.
  • By 564 B.C. King Croesus of Lydia had improved the refining techniques of gold and established the official gold currency.

Coins:

  • First used in the late 8th century BCE in Asia
  • The first pure gold coins with stamped images are credited to king Croesius of Lydia, 561-546 BCE
  • One of the most famous gold coins in antiquity was the Roman bezant, or solidus nomisma, first introduced in the reign of Emperor Constantine.
  • Was part of currency from the 4th to the 12th centuries CE.

Electrum (the natural alloy of gold and silver) was used in jewellery by the Egyptians from 5000 BCE.

Gold chains were first produced in the city of Ur (Southern Messopotamia) in 2500 BCE

In South America, gold was similarly worn by the Chavin Civilization in Peru

Gold casting was perfected by the Nazca civilization.

The Famous Gold Buddha from Thailand

  • Commonly known in Thai as Phra Sukhothai Traimit
  • weight of 5.5 tonnes (5,500 kg)
  • located in the temple of Wat Traimit, Bangkok, Thailand.
  • Was found covered in layer of colored glass, and is believed to have been there for over 2000 years

Gold is now also a symbol of merit.

Medals in competitions are made of metals to reflect the significance of the win

  • In countries such as India gold is used to adorn the body, their belief is that by doing this they attract wealth and blessings. India is the largest user of gold for jewelry today.
