HMP Shunt involved in Carbohydrate Metabolism, Lecture notes of Biochemistry

The pentose phosphate pathway is a metabolic pathway parallel to glycolysis. It generates NADPH and pentoses as well as ribose 5-phosphate, a precursor for the synthesis of nucleotides. While the pentose phosphate pathway does involve oxidation of glucose, its primary role is anabolic rather than catabolic.

Learning Objectives

After completion of this video, you will be able

to:

• Describe the oxidative and non-oxidative

phases of Hexose Monophosphate Shunt.

• State the significance of HMP Shunt.

HMP Shunt

• Also known as Pentose Phosphate Pathway OR

Phosphogluconate Pathway.

• Products formed:

Pentoses NADPH

Use:

Synthesis of DNA, RNA, CoA, NADH,

FADH 2 in rapidly dividing cells (bone

marrow, skin, intestinal mucosa)

Use:

Prevention & Repair of damage

caused due to oxygen radicals.

Synthesis of fatty acids, cholesterol

and steroid hormones (liver, adipose,

adrenal glands, gonads)

Non-oxidative Phase of HMP Shunt

• Transketolase: Catalyzes transfer of two carbon

fragment from ketose donor to aldose acceptor.

It requires TPP cofactor for stabilization of

carbanions.

• Transaldolase: Catalyzes transfer of three carbon

fragment from ketose donor to aldose acceptor.
