22S:166, Computing in Statistics
Fall 2007, Homework 8
Due: Mon. 11/26 in class
Go to
http://www.amstat.org/publications/jse/jse_data_archive.html
to download the datasets required for this assignment.
1. Download the data file “airport.dat” and read “airport.txt,” which
describes the dataset and variables.
Use SAS to compute simple descriptive statistics of the numeric vari-
ables in the dataset in order to check for reasonableness. Write a
sentence describing anything that looks very suspicious.
2. Also download the dataset “poverty.dat” and read about it in “poverty.txt.”
Use proc tabulate to produce a table that shows for each country
group:
number of countries in the group
mean and standard deviation of infant mortality rate
mean and standard deviation of life expectancy for males
In your table, the names of the country groups (“Eastern Europe,”
“South America,” etc.) should appear instead of the numeric codes,
and meaningful headings (“Infant Mortality Rate” and “Male Life Ex-
pectancy”) should appear instead of variable names.
