How coastal features are formed

What Is a Coastline?

What is the

definition of a

coastline?

What would

you expect

to see at

the coast?

What sorts

of activities

happen there?

What natural

features might

you see?

Human Geography Physical Geography

To understand features at the coast,

we must first understand something

about waves

Waves are incredible things! They might be fun for bodyboarding

and surfing, but they are so powerful that they shape the coasts!

Sometimes, they wear away the rock at the coast.

Sometimes, they drop off sand and stones that they have

swirled up and been carrying along.

Some key vocabulary!

When waves wear away rock (and break down

the land), this is called erosion.

When waves drop off sand and stone (and build

up the land), this is called deposition.

For each example, see if you can answer the

following questions:

  • What features are shown?
  • Where do you think they are found?
  • Are they caused by erosion or deposition?

Let’s look at some examples from

around the UK coast.

Now it’s time for the task:

How Do Coastal Features Form?

Choose two of the three worksheets to complete. All you need to do it sort the

captions into the correct order to show how each coastal feature is formed.

Then create images to go with each caption, like a comic strip.
