Marketing 410: International Marketing
Summer 1 2006 (China version)

“What I learned”: It was really interesting learning about a number of different countries
and how they do business. As well as how much the many economies and cultures in the
world differ from our own. Probably the thing I enjoyed most in this class was the
negotiations with Brazil. It put a whole new spin on things and really made you think
differently about how a deal is made. When going into the scenario you have a definite
plan and it seems easy, however once negotiations actually begin you quickly find out
that things don’t always go as smoothly as you’d hoped. I also enjoyed the different class
discussions we had just talking about different countries and comparing any number of
different variables.
“I wish I had known”: I wish I would have known the best way to get through great mass
of questions in Dr. Johnston’s quizzes. After the first couple of chapters though I think I
figured it out. But the first piece of advice I can give is that you have to do the practice
quizzes way more than just a half dozen times. To be sure I usually went through them at
least 15 – 20 times. Secondly SAVE THE QUESTIONS! Don’t be the fool who forgot to
save the word document, because you’ll need it for the final.

What I learned: I have learned so much from this course before I knew just about
nothing on foreign countries. I have not been blessed to get to travel overseas yet, so I
have not stayed on topics about other countries until now. I feel I have learned a lot
about China, since Dr. Johnston was there the first two weeks of the class. The class
discussions on-line taught me history, money, government, and etc…on China. Topics
on other countries such as Brazil, China, Mexico, have taught me to appreciate America.
I think we are the most blessed country…my heart went out to the countries that had so
much poverty. I also liked the country talks; I feel I now know the flags, business
etiquette and various facts on all the countries we talked about. The quizzes that were
assigned were very challenging, but very helpful in learning things about other countries.
I have really enjoyed this class, very different from anything I have ever taken.

I wish I had known: I had already taken a class with Dr. Johnston prior to this one, so I knew exactly what to expect…take the practices quizzes several times and always take the quizzes on time…they take time so always start taking in advance. Go to class, and follow all directions and everything should be fine! I loved Mktg 410 because it is not just an ordinary class, Dr. Johnston makes it fun while learning…and a lot of its online, so being organized and on time is VERY IMPORTANT! One last thing, print out your quizzes you take so you can use them for the FINAL! Risa Yoshimura MKTG 410 July 6, 2006 What I learned: I learned many different cultures from all over the world from this course. Knowing the different cultures is very important for the marketers to success on their business. Each country has very unique cultures that you cannot imagine! The videos shown during the class were very interesting and helpful to understand other cultures and topics discussed in the class. I learned how hard to get along with other countries which have different cultures from U.S from the negotiation practice. The practice was very practical. Even though you think you know the other cultures it is very hard to do business with other culture. It is very important that not only knowing the different cultures but also you have to have some experience with other cultures. I wish I had known: I think I did well on this course so there is nothing that I wish I had known. If there was any advice I could give someone who take this course next semester, it would be make sure to take practice quizzes as many times as you can. I spend so much time to take quizzes to get familiar with them. It might appear the different questions next time you submit. So spend a couple hours to take quizzes over and over, even though you get a perfect score. Another advice would be that attend class everyday. Videos, negotiation practice, presentations, and lectures really help you understanding the international marketing. Believe me, you can discover whole a lot of the different cultures in the class, and this class is very interesting! Rachel Chandler Mktg 410 July 5, 2006 What I Learned I learned a lot in this course about other countries and the way that they do marketing and business. Mainly we did this by watching videos and listening to lectures. However, we did have one guest speaker which was very interesting. I also learned how to do a PowerPoint presentation. I was stressed about it at first, but in the end it was good

I learned from this class was the complexity of doing business in foreign countries. Its not easy to import or export goods. I wish I had known to do all of my quizzes online and on time. It’s not that I didn’t know that it’s that I didn’t do it. This class is not hard and doesn’t require a great deal of work at all. You just need to do the work and get it in on time in order to receive a good grade. Also, doing the practice quizzes several times over will help you take the big quiz. You need to make sure to save the answers to all of your quizzes in order to be able to use them on the final. Johanna Mosby Marketing 410 7/6/ Question 1 “What I learned”: I learned different facts about international marketing that was quite interesting like the number one countries in doing business and different laws affecting trade between countries. The highlights of the course to me were the country talks because presentations are always interesting. I like to listen to classmate’s present information because it gives the professor a break and we can relate to our peers better and feel more comfortable. I also liked the negotiation exercise because it was a fun away in learning about how countries try to do business with one another. I like hands on experiences with learning in the classroom. The information that I saw that made an impression on me was seeing all the poverty in other countries. It is crazy that people live like that in today’s world. I was very amazed. The way that American based restaurants operate in different countries also amazed me. It is totally different from how things are here in the U.S. I do not think any topics changed my way of thinking. Question 2 “I wish I had known”: This is a fun and interesting course. I recommend it for anyone who likes to learn information about other countries. I wish I knew that the first two weeks were going to be online because that was a surprise to me. If I had known that the first two weeks were going to be online, I don’t know if I would have taken the class because I like the classroom environment better than the Internet. Harry Hart International Marketing July 6, 2006 What I learned? I learned a lot about many different countries through the country presentations. I learned everything about different countries from currencies to climate. I got a good idea of what countries I would like to visit and ones I would like to stay away from. I learned a lot about what all goes on in doing business outside your country. Doing business internationally can either make or break you and if you don’t know what all goes along with it you will fail. On the other hand, you can be very successful if you know what you’re doing and what to look out for. The overall difference in the way so many countries are run really made an impression on me.

I wish I had known? I wish I had known how important it is to print off 5 or 6 copies of each practice test before the quiz. I thought I could manage with out doing that but found out quickly the way to go is to take the practice test 5 or 6 times and either save your answers or print you some copies. Geoffrey Fuentes Marketing 410 July 6, 2006 Advice Assignment

  1. What I Learned: I learned the fundamentals of International Marketing through the variety of videos, speakers, student presentations, and one very good instructor. It was interesting to hear about foreign companies and how we do business with them. I also liked finding out about how long a business deal could take and how to negotiate those deals. Ethics go a long way in business, and being culturally sensitive (definition from the class wink) is important.
  2. What I Wish I Known: Well to be honest, I wish I had not have procrastinated as much as I did. Do the quizzes as soon as you find out about it. Never give up on the practice quiz. Make that whole point of extra credit. Showing up everyday for class was not hard to do, and the points really help out a lot. Doing work early instead of on time is key. I really wish I had printed all of my quizzes as soon as I finished each one of them because the final came from the quizzes. Printing them when I took them would have saved me a lot of trouble toward the end of the semester. Cheng-Yi Huang Marketing 410 July 5, 2006 Question 1 “What I learned” What I learned? I learned what the international marketing is and how to integrate and coordinate international marketing programs in diverse markets. What were the highlights of the course? The first one I want to highlight is the country talk part. It is a good way to learn countries from the students not from the book. And it was much fun and interesting. The other highlight is you show us some videos about countries and some commerce. Like Levis, Yoplait and Korean’s joy commerce. Those are really good. I think watching some videos and commerce are much helps us to learn and not feel boring. The last one is online quizzes. It’s really a good way to take tests--so convenient and no pressure. What information did you see that made an impression on you?
