HTC Case study
1. Evaluate HTC’s performance to date. What are its competitive
advantages and vulnerabilities?
One of the competitive advantages that immediately stood out to
me was their ability to innovate quickly. They studied the market
and repeatably compete by adapting to the new trends. Although
HTC was not yet well known in the US, but the few customers that
owned their smartphones were very loyal. Another competitive
advantage that HTC has is because of the company’s culture, they
encourage the employees to come up with new innovative ideas.
HTC is also vulnerable because there were many other companies
like Apple that were growing very fast too, there was a lot of
competition. HTC was also unknown to many people around the
world, there was not enough brand awareness. HTC also did not
have their own operating system and that made the company much
more vulnerable compared to the other competitors.
2. What should HTC’s OS strategy be? Should it stick with Windows
Mobile and Android? Should HTC build its own platform? Add/drop
others?
HTC’s OS strategy should become self-sufficient and create their own
operating system. This is a great strategy because it will allow HTC to
become more independent and will now have the ability to create something
unique by creating a more personalized interface. Creating their new
operating system will also help them stand out and give them a competitive
advantage.

HTC Case study

  1. Evaluate HTC’s performance to date. What are its competitive advantages and vulnerabilities? One of the competitive advantages that immediately stood out to me was their ability to innovate quickly. They studied the market and repeatably compete by adapting to the new trends. This is a great strategy because it will allow HTC to become more independent and will now have the ability to create something unique by creating a more personalized interface. Creating their new operating system will also help them stand out and give them a competitive advantage.
  1. All smartphone companies with operating systems have opened their own app store, trying to emulate Apple’s success. Samsung and LG announced plans to do the same as well. Should HTC build its own app store? Do something else? I strongly believe that HTC should build their own app store with the simple fact that they will be self-sustainable. They will also be able to save more money since they’ll be able to have more control over licenses. Having their own app store can easily help monitor and see how the apps are being accessed.
  2. Peter Chou and Cher Wang want to make HTC into the leading smartphone company in the world. What kind of strategic actions are needed to achieve this goal? Peter Chou and Cher Wang should first try to focus on a few or one model at a time. The reading mentioned that they had 50 different models of phones in the market, I believe that a better strategic action should be to add some of the new technology and features into one single phone instead of keep creating new phones. They should also focus on having a lower price for their phones which will attract much more customers. Peter Chou and Cher Wang should consider bringing more awareness and focus on advertising the handsets in order to gain popularity and become recognizable across the world.
