EMT If-Then Action Sheet
If: Patient is hypoglycemic (glucose < 60 mg/dL)
Then: Brain and organs are starving for sugar
Action: If alert enough to swallow, give oral glucose. If not, high-priority transport & call ALS.
If: Patient has missed period + sharp lower quadrant pain
Then: Possibly ectopic pregnancy - life-threatening
Action: Treat as ruptured ectopic pregnancy. Rapid transport, monitor vitals, alert hospital.
If: Patient is unresponsive and breathing inadequately
Then: Possible cardiac arrest or severe respiratory compromise
Action: Open airway, insert OPA/NPA, BVM ventilations, request ALS, begin CPR if no pulse.
If: Patient is bleeding severely from the leg
Then: Hemorrhagic shock risk - life-threatening bleed
Action: Apply direct pressure or tourniquet, rapid transport, treat for shock.
If: Patient is having a seizure but breathing adequately
Then: Likely post-ictal state or ongoing seizure
Action: Protect from injury, do not restrain, monitor airway, recovery position after seizure ends.
If: Patient has chest pain, is pale and sweaty
Then: Suspected cardiac event (MI)
Action: Place in position of comfort, give oxygen if needed, transport, monitor vitals & ECG if available.
If: Patient has altered mental status after trauma
Then: Possible brain injury - consider C-spine
Action: Stabilize C-spine, assess airway/breathing, transport to trauma center.
