Human reproduction is a sexual mode of reproduction involving the formation of gametes, fertilization, development of the embryo, and birth of the baby.
The male reproductive system consists of: A. Primary Sex Organs (Testes) Located in the scrotum, outside the abdominal cavity. Function: Spermatogenesis (formation of sperm) Secretion of male sex hormone (testosterone) B. Accessory Ducts Epididymis – Stores and matures sperm. Vas deferens – Transports sperm from epididymis to urethra. Ejaculatory duct – Carries sperm and seminal fluid. Urethra – Common passage for urine and semen. C. Accessory Glands Seminal vesicles – Produce fructose-rich seminal fluid. Prostate gland – Produces alkaline fluid for sperm motility.
Bulbourethral glands (Cowper's glands) – Secretes mucus for lubrication. D. External Genitalia Penis – Copulatory organ delivering sperm into the female reproductive tract.
The female reproductive system consists of: A. Primary Sex Organs (Ovaries) Produce ova (eggs) and secrete hormones like estrogen and progesterone. Located in the lower abdomen. B. Accessory Ducts Fallopian Tubes (Oviducts) – Transport the ovum to the uterus; fertilization occurs here. Uterus (Womb) – Implantation and development of the embryo. Cervix – Lower part of the uterus, connects to the vagina. Vagina – Birth canal and site of sperm deposition. C. External Genitalia (Vulva) Includes labia, clitoris, and vaginal opening.
Formation of gametes (sperm and ovum) through meiosis. A. Spermatogenesis (in males) Occurs in seminiferous tubules of testes.
Human reproduction involves complex processes including gametogenesis, fertilization, pregnancy, and childbirth. Understanding these biological processes is essential for reproductive health and family planning.
