BI 121 In-Class Assignment 1: Intro A&P
This document has opened in your personal Google Drive. It is your copy. You may find it useful to
change the name of the document to something you will remember and then you may freely edit. If you
choose, you can also download a Word document to edit (File -> Download).
Type your responses in the boxes below the questions; they will expand as you type. When you are
finished, download your answer sheet (File -> Download -> PDF) and upload it to the D2L assignment.
Questions:
1. Discuss with your groupmates the concepts of health disparities, healthcare disparities, health
equity, and the TED talk watched in class (The Problem with Race-Based Medicine).
Reflect below on any new facts, ideas, questions, or themes that emerged from your discussion
and how this relates to your life experiences and/or your future as a scholar, and allied health
professional, and/or a member of a family or your community. You may emphasize whatever you
wish, but please answer using one or two well-organized paragraphs:
The idea that race is a social construct that is flawed, was new to me. Health care professionals
need to understand that race is not based on inherent biological differences. Race is currently
based on physical attributes, but these traits don’t accurately reflect the genetic diversity or
underlying biological variations among individuals.
Avoiding these generalizations will help allied health professionals more accurately diagnose
patients. It will also maybe help assure that healthcare is more accessible to all regardless of
“race” or socioeconomic status.
2. Discuss the following with your groupmates, and answer each of the questions below:
Identify which anatomical plane—sagittal, frontal, or transverse—is the only one that could not
show (each plane may be used for one answer, more than one answer, or not at all):
Both eyes?
Sagittal
Both the hypogastric
and gluteal regions?
frontal
Both the sternum and
vertebral column?
frontal
3. In the first chapter of this book, you learned many anatomical terms to correctly identify the
regional anatomy of the body. In this chapter you also learned about the 11 body systems
components/functions. Look up the terms regional anatomy and systemic anatomy.Discuss
with your breakout group and answer below:

Would a surgeon have to focus more during their work on systemic anatomy or regional anatomy and why? Explain your answer. Regional anatomy is important for surgeons because it helps them understand the specific structures in a particular area where they will be operating, allowing them to navigate and perform surgeries with precision. Systemic anatomy provides a broader perspective by studying how different organs and tissues function together within body systems, helping surgeons understand how different systems interact.

  1. In a heart attack, the death of cardiac muscle reduces the heart’s pumping effectiveness. Thus, blood flow throughout the body slows down. This leads to widespread blood clotting. Blood clots block the flow of blood to the cardiac muscle, so the muscle is less nourished and still more of it dies. Discuss this process with your group to determine whether it is a positive or negative feedback system? Explain your answer. This is an example of positive feedback. In a heart attack the death of the cardiac muscles sets off a positive feedback loop.
  2. A student means to write about a part of the small intestine called the ileum , but misspells it as ilium. In complaining about the points lost, the student says, “I was only one letter off!” The instructor says, “But you changed the entire meaning of the word.” Work with your breakout group to find out why the instructor gave that reply. Explain below the instructor’s reasoning , and why YOU would either agree it is important for this course or would complain to your friends that the instructor nitpicks about stupid things: I agree with the instructor. This tiny misspelling completely changes the meaning of the word, and in this case the location/function on the body. This could easily lead to confusion. Hip bone vs. small intestine
