A. Your Portfolio must include:
- Short autobiographical sketch about myself My name is Tarlia Stapelfeldt. I am currently in my third year studying towards my BeD. From a very young age it has always been my dream to become a teacher and seeing this dream slowly surface is amazing. My experiences through the years of studying have been stressful, fun, confusing but in all it is worth it. My dream has always been to enrich young minds, as a little girl I always played ‘teacher’ with my friends and pretended to be their teacher this was the most memorable thing I remember from my childhood. The fact that I followed my dream is a personal goal that I have accomplished. I am a very strong-willed person; I go for what I want in life, and I always try my best!
- My teaching beliefs and practices and learning process I believe that good teaching is ensuring that meaningful learning takes place. This means that teaching is much more than instructing and rather more presenting. It is important you’re your learners understand every aspect of each lesson that I conduct. Teachers should know all about teaching and learning theories because for them to be able to teach they need to know all the guidelines for effective teaching. As a teacher you need to go out of your way always and make sure that a meaningful lesson was taught. During my school practical’s I always brought practical examples to introduce the lesson topic this way the students would always get a better picture and understanding of what I am teaching. It is important that a learner completes a lesson with all the information they may need and if they need any additional help as the teacher I am obliged to help. At the end of the day teaching is all about the students so as a teacher I dedicate myself to go the extra mile for my students
B. MARKED ASSIGNMENTS (02)
- Reflection on assignments 1,2 and 3 Assignment 1 I enjoyed assignment 1 as it was very informative. The quiz helped me to understand what the role of a teacher is, the different types of learning and the methods of teaching. By learning and studying this in this module it has helped me tremendously in my practical module (TPS3703). I was able to combat my lessons without fear and I had all the confidence and knowledge mainly because of this assignment/quiz. Assignment 2 This assignment gave me a deeper meaning of everything that I had done in assignment 1. It helps me to understand each sector individually withal the differences. I had to list the learning theories, the key construct, and the differences with the later theory. This was very informative, and it gave me a deeper understanding of teaching overall. I am now almost fully aware of what being a teacher is about. In the assignment I also learnt about the ADDIE model as well as the ID4T model. Overall assignment 2 was very informative. Below is an example of a lesson plan I used in one of my other modules: Assignment 3 This assignment gave me insight of what a lesson plan should be like. This information helped and guided me through my other modules. In the assignment/quiz I had to say what are the important elements in a lesson plan. For my TPS3703 portfolio I had to draft my own lesson plans and all the information I got from this assignment guided and helped me tremendously. Because of this assignment I am now able to conduct my own lesson as well put together a lesson plan.
Disadvantage: One disadvantage would be time management; would the lessons be able to incorporate all the knowledge the learners need to do the assessment. Advantage: it would allow teachers to get an idea of what the learners understand and what they don’t, this way the teacher will know what to revise on.
- Activity 4. After the lesson plan: Have I included learning objectives? Is there an assessment plan to assess the students on knowledge obtained? Is my time management sufficient? While they are teaching the lesson: Are all my learners capable of high order thinking? What incentive is there for learners to engage in high order thinking Which of my assessments will encourage learners to think and apply their knowledge in ways that will show how much they understand? After they have taught the lesson Are the lesson outcomes directly linked to the curriculum goals? What have I done to ensure that the outcomes, teaching strategies and assessment are aligned?
D. DESIGNING, PRESENTING AND REFLECTING ON INSTRUCTION
1.1) The lesson plan is not complete. The following components are missing
- Lesson topic
- Class objectives
- Duration
- Assessment
- Knowledge Lesson Topic: It is important to list the topic after listing the subject. So that you know what topic of the given subject you are focusing on. Class Objectives: the objective is a crucial part of the lesson plan because it states your goal that the learners should accomplish by the end of the lesson. Duration: this shows how long the lesson will take to be completed. Timing is important when making a lesson plan you must take the students learning styles into consideration also Assessment: at the end of the lesson an assessment is usually given this will evaluate the learners understanding of the lesson. Knowledge: this is the teachers summary of what knowledge students should gain out of the lesson. 1.2) Lesson Title: English Home Language, Poetry Date: 1 5.02. Outcomes: Learners must be able to identify parts of poetry on their own. They must be able to answer activity questions after the lesson Lesson Content: Learners need to understand how to identify parts of poetry in any given poem. The main areas to focus on would be finding rhymes, similes and alliteration Introduction: Before reading the poem, I will start a brief discussion about the topic alone of the poem. Teacher Activities: Observe and ask the learners questions to test their understanding of the poem Learner Activities: Learners must participate and give their input on the questions the teacher asks Closure: The learners will each take a copy of the poem as well as an activity Learner Assessment: Learners are to be given a short activity based on the poem to answer Lesson Evaluation: Learners must be captivated by the lesson from the introduction 1.3) Pedagogy/methodology is important in a lesson plan because pedagogy helps the students understand the subject better and it helps them in applying what they learnt outside of the
E. CONCLUSION
