Lab 5 – WVCC Design Scenario and Packet Tracer Lab
1. Based on the design requirements and decisions that have been made, what
wireless access points would you recommend for WVCC? Do some Internet
research to find an access point that will meet WVCC’s needs and write two
or three paragraphs about the product and why you chose it.
With WVCCs design criteria, it would be best for them to have on dedicated open access
point in each building which equal up to two access points. With the requirements being
IEEE 802.11n offering 600 mbps bandwidth and supporting up to 25 users simultaneously,
I would recommend the Linksys Business LAPN600 access point.
With the LAON600 access point, you are provided with multiple SSID’s, channel isolation,
band steering, SSID to VLAN mapping, and multiple operation mode (AP, Workgroup
Bridge). The access point provides high performance, easy installation via wall or ceiling
mounting and PoE ethernet port supported. A scheduler feature to allow users to manage
their wireless network by time and offer a rate limit and QOS feature to manage
bandwidth and priority to each SSID.
2. To accomplish user authentication for the private WLAN, WVCC’s IT department
will purchase a dedicated one-RU hardened appliance that will operate as a
centralized RADIUS server. Do some Internet research to find such a server that
will meet WVCC’s needs and write two or three paragraphs about the product
and why you chose it.
When it comes to deciding on a server for WVCC and operating as their centralized
RADIUS server, there are factors to think about. The design considerations can be as
follows: need to decide about the equipment that needs to be bought, choose a network
topology that suits to the Wireless campus network, need to develop the cabling between
various devices like access points and wireless routers, and finally analyze the network
requirement and decide the cost of implanting it. These devices will be needed for the
implementation of the RADIUS server. A Router, Hubs, Cables to connect devices, Bridges,
and Access Points.
An idea server for WVCC’s needs would be with FreeRadius for the open-source server
that is suitable for implementing a wireless network. This comes along with centralized
authentication, authorization, and accounting processes. Also the Mikrotik router OS will
provide a basis for setup for the Ardinal RADIUS server. Using this, devices will be able to
connect wirelessly and seamlessly.
