Lab Report 5: Diffusion and Osmosis
All lab reports are written in paragraph form. Include headings for each section (Introduction/ Purpose, Data, Discussion
and Conclusion) of the report. This handout serves as an outline to help construct your report. Make sure to look at all of the
content on the Blackboard website for clarifications on each experiment.
Introduction/Procedure
Introduce diffusion and osmosis and the differences between hypertonic, hypotonic and isotonic.
Discuss each experiment’s procedure briefly – Approximately, 1 paragraph per experiment, procedures are found in lab
manual
Results
Use the tables and illustrations on this sheet for your results. Fill out the results in each experiment (tables, graph and
illustrations). State results in paragraph form and use these results for the discussion section of your lab report. Do not forget to
include tables and graph (part/experiment - 2) in lab report.
Part I - Diffusion

Lab Report 5: Diffusion and Osmosis

All lab reports are written in paragraph form. Include headings for each section (Introduction/ Purpose, Data, Discussion and Conclusion) of the report. This handout serves as an outline to help construct your report. Make sure to look at all of the content on the Blackboard website for clarifications on each experiment.

Introduction/Procedure

Introduce diffusion and osmosis and the differences between hypertonic, hypotonic and isotonic. Discuss each experiment’s procedure briefly – Approximately, 1 paragraph per experiment, procedures are found in lab manual

Results

Use the tables and illustrations on this sheet for your results. Fill out the results in each experiment (tables, graph and illustrations). State results in paragraph form and use these results for the discussion section of your lab report. Do not forget to include tables and graph (part/experiment - 2) in lab report.

Part I - Diffusion

Table #2 – Iodine and water solution is tested at beginning of experiment and after 30 minutes with glucose urinalysis strips Color Glucose present? Discussion Beginning color of glucose test strip Light Green – 0 mg/dL Ending color of glucose test strip Kelly Green – 200 mg/dL On the illustration below indicate what substance is leaving the dialysis bag and what substance is entering the dialysis bag.

Part II – Osmosis

Part III – Osmosis in living Cells – Watch the video on Blackboard “Plasmolysis in Elodea and look at Lab 5 notes

400X Elodea (before NaCl) 400X Elodea (after NaCl)

Discussion

Discuss all results from each of the experiments completely. You can split up experiments into sections, just make sure to discuss ALL of the results and use the appropriate terminology (diffusion, osmosis, isotonic, hypertonic, hypotonic)

Conclusion

Wrap it up. Why are the processes of diffusion and osmosis so important in biology and human anatomy? Consider why it is so important that we drink water, etc.
