*Be able to identify the structures listed in the Brain Table and indicate a function. The complete list of identifiable structures also appears
in boldface in the following activities.
To receive full credit for this lab, have your instructor check off the following at the completion of each activity.
All colored tape labels are returned to their original co ndition.
All dissecting pins are returned to their original location. Appropriate PPE (gloves and eyewear).
Completion of all model and sheep brain labeling.
Activity 1: External Anatomy of the Human Brain
1. Obtain a brain model. As a group, use the colored tape labels provided to identify the following external brain

To Do Before Lab!

  • Read over the Lab 2 Anatomy of the Nervous System Lab Slides

To Do After Lab!

  • Keep all the notes and diagrams you create as part of the activities below. Lab practical exams will be composed of a selection of these questions/tasks.

Today’s Materials

  • Brain models
  • Sheep brains

*Be able to identify the structures listed in the Brain Table and indicate a function. The complete list of identifiable structures also appears in boldface in the following activities.

To receive full credit for this lab, have your instructor check off the following at the completion of each activity.  All colored tape labels are returned to their original condition.  All dissecting pins are returned to their original location. Appropriate PPE (gloves and eyewear).  Completion of all model and sheep brain labeling.

Activity 1: External Anatomy of the Human Brain

  1. Obtain a brain model. As a group, use the colored tape labels provided to identify the following external brain structures or anatomical landmarks along the following views: dorsal, lateral, and ventral. Once complete, take a photo of your work to review/study and remember to remove all tape! Dorsal or Lateral View
  • Longitudinal fissure
  • Transverse cerebral fissure
  • Central sulcus
  • Precentral gyrus
  • Postcentral gyrus
  • Cerebellum

Dorsal or Lateral View

  • Lateral sulcus
  • Parietal lobe
  • Frontal lobe
  • Temporal lobe
  • Occipital lobe

Ventral View

  • Pituitary gland (hypophysis)
  • Pons of brain stem
  • Medulla oblongata of brain stem

Activity 2: External Anatomy of the Sheep Brain

  1. Obtain a sheep brain. As a group, use the dissecting pins provided to identify the following external brain structures or anatomical landmarks along the following views: dorsal and lateral. Once complete, take a photo of your work to review/study and remember to remove all pins! Dorsal or Lateral View
  • Pia mater
  • Dura mater
  • Arachnoid mater
  • Spinal cord
  • Longitudinal fissure
  • Transverse cerebral fissure
  • Cerebellum
  • Lateral sulcus
  • Brain stem models
  • Spinal nerve models

Activity 3: External Anatomy of the Sheep Brain (Continued)

  1. Obtain a sheep brain. As a group, use the dissecting pins provided to identify the following external brain structures or anatomical landmarks along the following views: dorsal and ventral. Once complete, take a photo of your work to review/study and remember to remove all pins! Dorsal View
  • Parietal lobe
  • Frontal lobe
  • Occipital lobe
  • Central sulcus
  • Precentral gyrus
  • Postcentral gyrus

Ventral View

  • Pituitary gland (hypophysis)
  • Pons of brain stem
  • Medulla oblongata of brain stem
  • Temporal lobe

Activity 4: Internal Anatomy of the Human Brain

  1. Obtain a labeled half brain model. As a group, identify the following internal brain structures by matching them to their corresponding number or letter on the labeled half of the brain model. Once your answer key is complete, take a photo of the brain model to review/study!
  • _____ Corpus callosum
  • _____ Thalamus
  • _____ Hypothalamus
  • _____ Mammillary body of hypothalamus
  • _____ Fornix
  • _____ Pineal gland
  • _____ Lateral ventricle
  • _____ Choroid plexus of third ventricle
  • _____ Cerebral peduncle of midbrain
  • _____ Pons
  • _____ Medulla oblongata
  • _____ Cerebral aqueduct
  • _____ Fourth ventricle

Activity 5: Internal Anatomy of the Sheep Brain

  1. Obtain a sheep brain. As a group, use the dissecting pins provided to identify the internal brain structures below. Once complete, take a photo of your work to review/study and remember to remove all pins!
  • Arbor vitae of cerebellum
  • Cerebral cortex
  • Cerebral medulla
  • Corpus callosum
  • Hypothalamus
  • Lateral ventricle
  • Mammillary body of hypothalamus
