Medical Procedures: Decontamination, Fasting Tests, Hand Hygiene, Doctor-Patient Bond, Quizzes of Biology of microorganisms

This description provides definitions for medical terms and procedures such as decontamination, fasting blood tests, hand hygiene, physician-patient relationship, therapeutic drug monitoring, and the use of a tourniquet. Decontamination is the process of removing or destroying bloodborne pathogens to prevent disease transmission. Fasting blood tests are performed on patients who have not eaten or drunk for a certain period of time. Hand hygiene involves washing hands with soap and water or using antiseptic hand rub. The physician-patient relationship is the private and confidential association between a patient and their physician. Therapeutic drug monitoring tests drug levels in a patient's blood to determine dosage and monitor effectiveness and toxicity. A tourniquet is a soft rubber strip used to locate veins for venipuncture.

TERM 1
decontaminate
DEFINITION 1
use of physical or chemical means to remove or destroy
bloodborne pathogens on a surface (in cluding skin) or item so that
pathogens are no longer able to trans mit disease. Prior to
venipuncture, decontamination invo lves cleaning with a sterile
swab or sponge to prevent microbiolo gical contamination of either
the patient or the specimen. This is u sually accomplished with a
sterile swab containing 70 percent iso propyl alcohol (or
isopropanol).
TERM 2
fasting blood tests
DEFINITION 2
test performed on blood taken from a patient who has
abstained from eating and drinking (except water) for a
particular period of time.
TERM 3
hand hygiene
DEFINITION 3
term that applies to hand washing (with non-antimicrobial
soap and water). antiseptic hand washing, antiseptic hand
rub (with waterless antiseptic), or surgical hand antisepsis.
TERM 4
physician-patient relationship
DEFINITION 4
the association between the patient and the physician
providing clinical and consultative services the
communication between them is private and confidential.
TERM 5
therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM)
DEFINITION 5
testing procedures to evaluate drug levels in a patient's
blood. This is valuable for drug dosage and to monitor the
patient for a variety of other factors (clinical effectiveness,
toxicity, etc.).

tourniquet

DEFINITION 6 a soft rubber strip typically about 1 inch wide and 15 to 18 inches long used on the arm to help find a site for venipuncture. The ends are stretched around a patient's arm about 3 inches above the venipuncture area. The tightening of the tourniquet causes venous filling in the veins and enables better visualization and feel of the prominent veins in the area.
