Reflection Paper - Noli Me Tangere
1. What is the topic of the movie?
Noli Me Tangere by Jose Rizal is primarily concerned with describing the Spanish
colonization of the Philippines and how the Spanish mistreated the Filipino people. This movie
contains a lot of symbolism and historical events that helped the Filipino people to start a
revolution and oust the Spanish colonizers during the time of their colonization. Every character
in Noli Me Tangere plays a part in the struggle for Philippine independence, representing various
roles in Philippine society. The movie portrayed actual occurrences during the Spanish
colonization of the Philippines, including social issues, injustice, and the Philippines' status as a
backward nation, as well as how the command decisions of the Friars were more influential than
those of the Governor-General. The film urges us to consider our attitudes toward and actions on
behalf of our nation. The movie's message, which still holds true today, is to support nationalism
and learn to embrace change in ourselves. By upholding the law, fostering Philippine culture,
and understanding the country's actual purpose by cooperating with one another to enhance it, we
must support our nation. It instills in us the virtues of wisdom, upholding justice, and love for our
nation. This movie was an advisory for the Filipinos to fight against the colonizers and today’s
reminder of our history. The characters and the events in the story resemble our life, culture, and
beliefs as Filipino people. This film will mark in our hearts, the values that the novel tells us to
be a good role model that will benefit our country. Watching this movie will make us realize the
true meaning of nationalism and being a catalyst for change.

and is making every effort to get in the way.
Padre Damaso - The country's native tongue, Tagalog, is seldom spoken or understood by
Father Damaso, a haughty and pedant priest. Father Ruben Navarrette describes him as a
shameless blowhard who isn't afraid to disparage people who aren't religious.
Elias is a rebel criminal who hates both the Catholic Church and the Spanish government's
hold on the Philippines. When Ibarra rescues the man’s life from a dangerous crocodile,
Elias swears to protect him from his enemies prowling around town while wearing a day

 Sisa, who is the mother of Crispin and Basilio, loses her mind after losing her sons.  A Filipina named La Doctora Victorina de los Reyes de Espada was Don Tiburcio's wife. Dona Victorina prioritizes maintaining her reputation as a stunning socialite, despite the fact that she is past her prime, as Rizal makes a point of emphasizing.  An older Filipina woman named Dona Consolación is wed to an ensign. Dona Consolación is a harsh, nasty companion who berates the ensign and picks violent battles with him that is heard throughout the village.  Doctor Tiburcio de Espada is a stutterer from Spain who appears to be much older than his 35 years. PROTAGONIST Juan Crisostomo Ibarra y Magsalin (Ibarra), María Clara de los Santos, Elias ANTAGONIST Father Damaso, Father Salví, Doña Consolación

3. Name two or more characters you believe greatly influenced Crisostomo Ibarra's life and perspective. The two person that greatly influenced Crisostomo Ibarra’s life and perspective were Maria Clara and Elias. Maria Clara’s character is inspired by Jose Rizal’s childhood sweetheart, Leonor Rivera, many would say that she influenced Crisostomo Ibarra just because he is her fiancĆ© and the person you love will influence you the most. Aside from that fact, I think in the movie, Rizal literally meant for her to represent the Philippines under Spanish colonization, which is yes, desirable, but weak. Since she is the representation of the Philippines, he influences Ibarra a lot, from his perspective and through his life. Elias was principled. Even when he discovered that an ancestor of Crisostomo Ibarra was responsible for the eradication of his ancestors, he was still able to maintain his composure and prevented himself from taking the life of Crisostomo. Today’s world has leaders and servants, bosses and employees, lords and squires. The first can never survive without the latter. In the same sense, Don Crisostomo Ibarra would never have been able to escape and continue to live but for the vital role Elias played. Crisostomo, the main character, escaped from prison through the help of Elias. They used a small boat to reach their destination; but before they got there, they were pursued by civil guards. Elias knew that the guards were aware that Crisostomo was aboard that boat; but he also presumed that they did not know who among them the real Crisostomo was. So he jumped off the boat and swam. He was able to divert the attention of the guards to himself, thus allowing the main character to escape. Elias may not be the one who held the most crucial role in the novel, but his role was very essential to the life of Crisostomo. Sometimes, the mission that one has to fulfill in life is not to directly make the world a better place, but to empower, inspire, or challenge someone else who has the true potential to carry on a larger task in this world of ours. 4. Cite two or more scenes from the movie that you feel are still happening at present. The corruption and brutality of Spanish priests and the injustices to the Indios were the most common scenes in the movie Noli Me Tangere that is still happening in the Philippines today. The Friars have made the Catholic religion an instrument for enriching themselves and perpetuating themselves in power by seeking to coerce the ignorant Filipino in fanaticism and superstitions instead of teaching them true Catholicism. This scene in Noli Me Tangere is still an ongoing problem here in the Philippines. It seems that most of the people who have positions and
