Name __________________________________________ Per. _____ Lord of the Flies Chapter 6: Guided Reading Questions

  1. p. 95 96: Explain and describe the “sign (that) came down from the world of grown ups.”

Contemplate: What connection does the “beast from the air” have with the novel’s themes. What does it symbolize?

  1. p. 96 97: What are Samneric busy doing? Why do they feel lucky Ralph didn’t go after them the night before? What do they compare Ralph to? What do the woodlice remind Eric of?
  2. p. 100: How do Samneric describe the beast they saw? Is their description accurate?
  3. p. 101 103: Describe the conversation the boys have about the beast. Include the main points Ralph and Jack make and what they argue about. How does Ralph overcome Jack’s challenge during the discussion?
  4. p. 103: Explain the plan the boys make for searching for the beast. Whose plan is it?
  1. p. 103: What significant thoughts does Simon have about the beast while the boys are walking to the “castle”? What thoughts does he have about himself?
  2. p. 104: Once the boys arrive at the “castle”, how do they decide who will go across the bridge to look for the beast? Who goes? What does this say about Jack and Ralph?
  3. p. 105: Describe what Ralph sees when he looks down into the Atlantic Ocean as he stands on the bridge.
  4. p. 105: Inference Why do you think Ralph doesn’t really expect to encounter the beast?
  5. p. 106: Why does Jack join Ralph? Explain their different opinions about the castle.
  6. How do most of the boys react to their discovery of the “castle”? What foreshadowing takes place at the end of the chapter?
  1. p. 103: Explain the plan the boys make for searching for the beast. Whose plan is it? Ralph’s plan is that they will eat and then take a cooler route than across the hot beach sands. He lets Jack lead the way.
  2. p. 103: What significant thoughts does Simon have about the beast while the boys are walking to the “castle”? What thoughts does he have about himself? Incredulity He can’t believe there is actually a beast with all these attributes: it has claws but doesn’t leave tracks and isn’t fast enough to catch the twins. About himself, he berates himself for being afraid to speak up.
  3. p. 104: Once the boys arrive at the “castle”, how do they decide who will go across the bridge to look for the beast? Who goes? What does this say about Jack and Ralph? Ralph and Jack hesitate. Ralph suggests Jack is the hunter, to which Jack merely flushes. Ralph then steps up to go by himself. Jack wants to be a leader and act brave, but in the face of real fear, it is Ralph who shows bravery and leadership.
  4. p. 105: Describe what Ralph sees when he looks down into the Atlantic Ocean as he stands on the bridge. He is on a narrow bridge of rock. The ocean is swelling up and down over rocks and coral. One flat rock there looks like a table. The ocean is compared to a “sleeping leviathan” and is much more massive than the sheltered lagoon.
  5. p. 105: Inference Why do you think Ralph doesn’t really expect to encounter the beast? He still has a grip on reality and has not fallen into believing in beasts or ghosts.
  6. p. 106: Why does Jack join Ralph? Explain their different opinions about the castle. Ralph going ahead by himself would make Jack look weak. Besides, nothing had happened to Ralph. Jack thinks the castle would make a great fort. They could roll rocks and have a great game. Ralph does not like the place at all and points out that there is not enough fresh water. He thinks the place is rotten. For a moment the two boys remember the fun they had rolling the rock on the mtn. Ralph wants to get to the mtn. for the fire.
  7. How do most of the boys react to their discovery of the “castle”? What foreshadowing takes place at the end of the chapter? They want to stay there and play “fort”. They roll a rock down the cliff for fun and want to continue the game or go back to the shelters. At the end of the ch., they are described as being mutinous, perhaps foreshadowing that they will have a mutiny.
