Who our closest friends are has a dramatic impact on our lives. “With the coming of dawn, the angels urged Lot, saying, ‘Hurry! Take your wife and your two daughters, or you will be swept away... And when Lot hesitated, the angels grabbed his hand, and the hands of his wife and his two daughters (for God’s mercy was upon them), and pulled them out of the city.” Genesis 19:15, 16 “And as soon as the men [angels] had brought them out, they said, ‘Flee for your lives! Do not look back and don’t stop anywhere in the plain. Escape to the mountains or you will be swept away.’” Genesis 19: “But Lot said to them, ‘Oh no, my lords! You have magnified your lovingkindness by saving my life; but I cannot escape to the mountains, for this disaster will still overtake me there, and I will die. Now, behold, there is a town near enough to flee to and it is small. Please let me escape there (for is it not small?) – that my life may be saved.’” Genesis 19:18-‐ 20 “And the angel said, ‘Behold, I grant you this request, not to overthrow the town about which you have spoken. Hurry – escape there! For I cannot do anything until you get there.’” Genesis 19:21, 22a “Therefore, the name of this town was called Zoar [Hebrew = “small”].” Genesis 19:22b “Now, the sun had risen by the time Lot came to Zoar. Then the LORD rained down fire and brimstone on Sodom and Gomorrah... and He overthrew those cities, and all the valley, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and all that grew on the ground.” Genesis 19:23-‐ 25 “Now Abraham [in Hebron] arose early that morning... and looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah; and he saw, and behold, the smoke of the land was ascending like the smoke of a furnace.” Genesis 19:27, 28 Genesis, part 42 – “Lot’s Sad Ending” “But Lot’s wife looked back and became a pillar of salt.” Genesis 19: “Remember Lot’s wife.” Luke 17: “And Lot left Zoar and stayed in the mountains, and his two daughters with him; for he was afraid to stay in Zoar; so he stayed in a cave along with his two daughters.” Genesis 19: “Then the firstborn said to the younger, ‘Our father is old, and there is no man to come into us after the manner of the earth. Come let us make our father drunk with wine, and let us lie with him, that we may preserve our family through our father.’” Genesis 19:31, 32 “So they made their father drink wine that night, and the firstborn went in and lay with her father; and he did not know when she lay down or when she arose.” Genesis 19: “On the following day, the firstborn said to the younger, ‘Behold, I lay last night with my father; let us make him drink wine tonight also; then you go in and lie with him.. .’” Genesis 19:
“So they made their father drink wine that night also, and the younger arose and lay with him; and he did not know when she lay down or when she arose either.” Genesis 19: “Thus, both Lot’s daughters became pregnant by their father. The firstborn daughter bore a son and called his name Moab; he is the father of the Moabites to this day.” Genesis 19:36, 37 “As for the younger, she also bore a son, and she called his name Ben-‐ammi; he is the father of the Ammonites to this day.” Genesis 19: So What? One of the greatest proofs of the Bible’s trustworthiness is that it openly tells us about the failures of its heroes as well as their successes. No human society has ever considered incest between a father and his daughter to be acceptable. “Incest between a father and his daughter has been considered a sexual taboo in all known human collectives and cultures.” “What happened to these girls that threw their moral compass so far off that they would plan and execute such a thing?” “Do not be deceived: ‘Bad company corrupts good morals.’” 1 Corinthians 15: Who we “keep company with” will inevitably have an influence on our morals, values, and behavior. And as the Bible says: if these people are ungodly people, their influence is going to be “corrupting.” “Now if Christ is preached, that He has been raised from the dead, how do some among you say that there is no resurrection of the dead?” 1 Corinthians 15: “If the dead are not raised, ‘Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.’” 1 Corinthians 15:32b “Hey – when we die it’s all over, so let’s forget about morals and holy living and just grab all the sensual pleasures we can now.” “Do not be deceived: ‘Bad company will corrupt your good morals.’” 1 Corinthians 15: “Become sober-‐minded as you ought, and stop sinning; for some people have no knowledge of God. I speak this to your shame.” 1 Corinthians 15: 34 “Now the people of Sodom were exceedingly wicked, and sinning greatly against the LORD.” Genesis 13: Lot’s daughters lived their whole lives “keeping company with” the people of Sodom and allowing their morals to rub off on them. The result is that these two girls lost all sense of decency and virtue – to the point that they could plan and carry out the most unholy kind of incest without the slightest pang of conscience. “They had been ‘Sodom-‐tainted.’” Charles Ryrie
