Making Bombs for Hitler Script
For this Book Talk you will need
• 1 actor (Lida)
Lida: tattered dress, bare feet, square blue badge with a white
border inside all four side and OST printed in white in the middle
• Additional props: stool, copy of Making Bombs for Hitler
Lida: (sitting on stool) I dream. Even here, in this horrific place –
living under impossible conditions that are not even fit for
animals… I dream of a time when being Ukrainian made
me feel proud and strong and happy… Of those days when
I had an identity…and freedom. I dream of a time before
I was deposited in this labour camp, deemed subhuman,
and made to wear these badges (pointing to badge on her dress) that mark us as being from the
“Occupied Eastern Territory”.
Lida: I dream of the school my little sister, Larissa, and I used to attend, before the Nazis invaded and
closed them down
Lida: I dream of my grandmother, Baba’s, delicious soups… Something – anything – to take my mind off
the rotten-smelling, murky brown mess that fills my bowl at every meal. I dream of being back home
in our beds that were filled with goose down. (pausing) That last night before the Nazis came – before
Larissa and I were stolen away – we had snuggled up together under our Baba’s thick goose-down
quilt… I can still hear Baba singing that lullaby as we closed our eyes and drifted off to sleep. That
was my last happy memory and I want to hold it in my heart forever
Lida: I dream of Mama…and of how she always told me to find beauty where I could. After Mama and Tato
were taken, Larissa and I went to live with our Baba. The three of us stitched out bits of happiness
however we could… (pausing & looking saddened) But then that Nazi woman dressed in brown gave
Larissa and me candies in exchange for information… Information that led the Nazis to my Baba…
and now she’s dead.

Page 2 of 2 S16BOOKTALKSCRIPTS17BTIABSCRIPT Lida: I dream of surviving this place, of making it out of here as whole as possible and, ultimately, finding Larissa. Lida: And now, several of my bunkmates and I are being sent to the munitions factory to make bombs. The soldiers have threatened us that if we make any mistakes, we’ll all be killed… (pausing) Yet even if my life is endangered, I dream of doing all that I can to sabotage the Nazi quest for power and dominance… I want my dreams to become a reality. No, I NEED my dreams to become a reality. And here is my story… (holding up a copy of Making Bombs for Hitler) Making Bombs for Hitler – it’s at your Scholastic Book Fair.
