Marketing 301: Principles of Marketing (online) Fall 2005 Advice Assignment (301NCFA05advice) Laurinda Lamb Marketing 301 11/29/ Over the course of the years I have had the privilege of working with many different types of companies. My job was to go in and set up their computers and set up a bookkeeping system that would work for them. One area that I never had too much of a dealing with was the Marketing end of the spectrum. (What I learned) In this course I have learned what a valuable tool that Marketing can be for any organization. The marketing strategies that management use and how to influence potential customers plays a key role in a company’s success. (Information that made an impression and highlights) The chapters that I enjoyed the most were Chapter One and Chapter 17. Chapter 1 played an important role in teaching me the importance of marketing in today’s business and society. Chapter 17 helped me to understand the key elements in advertising and public relations. (Topics that changed my way of thinking) Outlining the advertising objectives and the importance of maintaining good public relations can only help a company prosper. When I registered for this class I was not very excited. When I thought of marketing I guess my mind would wander to the traveling salesman of yesterday. It just did not seem exciting. (Advice)Anyone who is required to take this course do not make this mistake and keep an open mind. For all others I feel this is an important class to take for whatever career you decide to pursue. I can see where this class could help not only large companies in the business of sales but a farmer, doctor, lawyer etc… could benefit from the course. (What did I need to know and how would I do it differently now) Looking back now I wish that I had the marketing knowledge that I do now to encourage owners and managers to distribute more money into their advertising, marketing, and promotional budgets. Overall I am very pleased with the knowledge that I gained in this course. Vicky Pierce Principles of Marketing November 28, 2005 What I learned? I have learned many things in this class, I have learned what it takes to market a product. I’ve learned about marketing strategies, the marketing environment, ethics, social responsibility, customer relationship management, different pricing objectives. Product, Branding, and Packaging Concepts, and Consumer Buying Behavior. I have learned many interesting things in this course. This whole course has made an impression on me. I have really enjoyed every chapter in
this course. A lot of the things that I’ve learned in this course I can use at my current job. This course and my Organizational Management course go hand in hand. I am glad that I have taken these two courses together. The things I’ve learned in this class I can use in my Management class. Taking these two courses at the same time has made both of these classes easier. This class has changed the way I think about our Marketing Department here at work. I understand now why they do the things they do. Now, I have more respect for our Marketing department. I have learned that a Marketers job is harder than I thought. This course has given me a whole new perspective on marketing. I have really enjoyed this class. I wish I had known? A piece of advice I would give someone about this course is to take it, especially if they are specializing in the BUS degree program. I would also advise them to take this course with the Organizational Management course. This course has taught me a lot. It’s a very interesting course. If the person doesn’t like taking lots of quizzes I would advice against this course, because you have a quiz weekly, But the quizzes were good for me. I like taking quizzes better than I like having loads of homework. Also this course requires a lot of reading and studying, If you’re a person that doesn’t like to read or study a lot, then this course isn’t for you. The book is very interesting and knowledgeable. This course is one of my favorite courses, so I have nothing bad to say about this course. I wish I had known to take this course a lot sooner than now. I really like the way Dr. Johnston has taught this course. The course outlines and the power point presentations help a lot. Dr. Johnston is a very good teacher. Emily LeForge Mktg 301 November 28
Alvin Wilson MKTG 11/30/ What I learned in this course is how marketing is defined, and the understanding of marketing concept and marketing orientation, and the importance of building strong customer relationships. It is not just enough to let customers know about your product, but I learned that companies that have the right goods in the right place, at the right time, in the right quantity, and with the right support services, will be able to sell more products than their competitors that do not. Some of the highlights of the course include the discussion board and specific facts in the textbook. For example, the fact that last year consumers spent more on pets than on jewelry (about 12 billion dollars worth). The information that impressed me the most is how so many diverse companies today use the Internet to enhance their businesses- like LL Bean, Target, Estee’Lauder, Kellogg, Del Monte, etc. The topics that change my way of thinking were some of the international laws and issues in marketing. For example, in-home (door-to-door) interviews are illegal in some countries and also some business “payoffs” are legal in some countries. So one would have to do a lot of marketing research about a country’s culture when entering global markets. My advice to students beginning this course is to always read each chapter thoroughly. If possible, complete the discussion assignments on the day of notice or at least by the next day. And do not wait until the last day to study for quizzes or try to complete the discussion board assignments. What I would do differently now is that I would have more communication with the instructor either by e-mail or phone if necessary. There were a lot of topics that I read but I really did not get a full understanding about it; and it showed at test-time. Most of the questions that I missed on the quizzes were a result of not completely understanding the text, especially when no examples were given. So if I had to do it again, I would definitely have more contact with the instructor.
