Patient/ Family Education GENERIC: Labetalol TRADE: NORMODYNE, TRANDATE CLASSIFICATION: Therapeutic class: Antihypertensi veves Pharmacologic class: Alpha-beta blockers Is the dose safe? YES Treats high blood pressure Edema, orthostatic hypotension, flushing, ventricular arrhythmias may occur Decrease in blood pressure It may take several weeks before you get the full benefit of this drug. Keep taking this medication even if you feel well. GENERIC: TRADE: CLASSIFICATION: Is the dose safe? Priority Medications/ Treatment: The current clinical management of PE is hydralazine with labetalol and magnesium sulfate to slow disease progression and prevent maternal seizure, and hopefully prolong the pregnancy Magnesium sulfate (a type of mineral) may be given to treat active seizures and prevent future seizures. Antihypertensive medications may be given to lower blood pressure. Review blood pressure and prevent falls Assess the respiratory rate of the newborn
