Microscopic Magnification Calculations for Organelles and Cell Structures, Study notes of Biology

Several examples of calculating magnification and actual sizes of organelles and cell structures from given diagrams and scale bars. Students can practice their skills in interpreting microscopic images and performing calculations.

What you will learn

  • What is the actual length of line AB in the first diagram?
  • What is the actual length of structure G in the third diagram of an animal cell?
  • What is the magnification of the second diagram showing an alveolus and a blood capillary?

Magnification

• Magnification is how large an image is

compared to the object’s real size

magnification = Image size

Actual size of object

The image is what is printed on the page The magnification is given on the image, alongside the scale bar The actual size of the object should be given in μm or nm

The diagram below is a drawing of an alveolus together with an

associated blood capillary.

The line AB in the diagram represents an actual distance of 1.5 μm.

Calculate the magnification of the drawing. Show your working.

Answer = × .................................................

A cell X blood capillary alveolus lined with squamous epithelium B = 21mm 1.5mm = 21000 mm 1.5mm

The diagram below shows the general structure of an animal cell as

seen under an electron microscope.

_________

5 mm 1) Calculate the magnification factor of the diagram

24mm 5 mm = 24000 mm 5 mm

= x 4800

The diagram below shows the general structure of a plant cell when

viewed under an electron microscope.

___________

40 mm

  1. Calculate the magnification factor of the diagram

23mm 40 mm = 23000 mm 40 mm

= x 575
