Body Positions

1. Anatomical position- a standing posture with

the arms at the side and the palms of the

hands facing forward

2. Supine- lying on back with face upward

3. Prone- lying on stomach with face downward

Movement Terms

  1. Adduction- motion toward the midline of the body
  2. Abduction- motion away from the midline of the body
  3. Inversion- when the sole of the foot is turned inward (ankle movement)
  4. Eversion- when the sole of the foot is turned outward (ankle movement)
  5. Lateral flexion- bending of a body part away from the midline

  1. Distal- away from an attachment, where a limb attaches to the trunk of the body
  2. Superior- refers to one point, or structure, being higher than another
  3. Inferior- refers to one point, or structure, being lower than another
