Hello everyone! My name is Batya Copley and my informative speech is on Mental Health! I will be specifically talking about the two main types of mental health; anxiety and depression. There are many other types of mental illnesses such as; eating disorders, personality disorders, obsessive compulsive disorder, stress response syndromes, and so much more. But our main focus that I will be informing you today is anxiety and depression. TERM 2
DEFINITION 2 Many people might have these disorders, or we know of someone who does. You are not alone, many others experience the same disorders. To understand what mental illness is. We first have to acknowledge what it means. Mental health is the state of our prosperity. It has to do with the mind. Mental health includes emotional, psychological, and social well being. Mental health affects the way we think, act and feel. TERM 3
DEFINITION 3 It helps decide how we cope with everyday stress, work productively, and make choices. No matter what stage of life you are in, mental health is very important at every stage of life. The reason why I chose this topic is because of my experience. My mother has mental health issues and Ive visited her many times at Napa State Hospital in Napa Valley. I have seen what it like, inside and out. My mother told me how it was living there. TERM 4
DEFINITION 4 She told me many stories, how they werent able to have a brush to brush their hair, they had like a cheap dollar store brush that fit in their hand. They couldnt shave their legs, arms, armpits, etc. The residents in the institution were not able to cut their own finger nails/ toenails. They had to have a staff worker cut their nails them, for them. We were able to visit my mother and bring her food that she wanted, play board games. TERM 5
DEFINITION 5 They were given $12 a month to buy necessities from a catalog. They were unable to order candy, and soda. We as the outsiders were able to send care packages for them to have soda, candy, a hand- held radio to listen to music, shampoo and conditioner, etc. I also work at Marshall Hospital and have seen and heard people yelling and screaming.Im not sure what was going on and cannotstate a whole a lot because of the HIPPA laws.
But it was pretty intense. I work at Eskaton which is an assisted living facility. I have seen a lot of stuff happen there as well because of mental illnesses such as dementia and alzheimers disease. I have seen residents in the pass shouting for taxis in the dining room, asking constantly where their husband/ wife is at. Ask if they are on a ship, or at church in the dining hall. Where they are at, which state they are living in. Ive seen some instances where residents mistaken us as the staff for their relatives. TERM 7
DEFINITION 7 Once I was taking a breakfast order and the resident started throwing water up against the wall. I work around and for people who have mental disorders. The resources that I have for my research project are academic resources since they have more research than non-academic research websites. Plus they have sources to help people who have mental illnesses which I thought was very unique!I have been working/ caring for people who have mental illness for almost 4 years now. TERM 8
DEFINITION 8 This topic should matter to everyone because it affects anybody at any given age. Whatever stage you are at in life, it can still affect you today. Or even 15 years from now. Mental health is just as important as physical health. It has affected my mother who is is 50 years old. Nevertheless how it affects elders who I take care of who are in their 60-100s. TERM 9
DEFINITION 9 Mental illness is something we all have heard of. But it has never been discussed, and it should. Some people are comfortable talking about this subject, other people are uncomfortable. Mental illness should be treated as any other medical illness. It does not discriminate race or ethnicity. Mental health problems include mental health disorders and they can be temporary or permanently. TERM 10
DEFINITION 10 The goal of this research is to understand what the majority perspective on the mental illness, the aim is to teach society the early signs of mental health, different types of mental health, the toll mental health has on our educational system, state and local relations of mental health. Defining mental illnesses are medical conditions that disrupt a persons thinking, feeling, mood, ability, and behavior to relate to others and daily performance.
