Mobile Point of Sale System As part of the Information Technology team working for HB company, found in Honolulu, Hawai'i I was instrumental in getting upper management to sign off with a ‘Go' to pay for a new point of sale system or POS for their restaurant subsidiaries. As revenue increases and customer attendance grows, it was time to look at setting up a technological system that would accommodate the growth while delivering improved customer service. Also, a new system would allow HB to still be competitive in the food service industry. After completion of the first two phases of the systems development life cycle which include- system investigation and system analyst, my team received the budget money needed to develop, test, and run the point of sales system (Rainer, Prince, 2016). I found the necessary hardware, software, and networking components that a POS needs. I would buy touch screen monitors, terminals, receipt printer, cash drawers, card readers, kitchen printer, several Apple iPads, a router, a modem, an accounting computer with AccuPOS Management and AccuLINK adapter, and twisted wiring (Angeles 2015). The system would run on Apple iPad POS system offered by ShopKeep (Shopkeep 2017). This system is reliable and easy to understand and use. The entire system sold as a package comes with 24/7 customer service and help desk techs. The Apple software is widely used by our competitors and is highly regarded in the restaurant industry.

Figure 2: HB’s hardware and software POS system. (Image, AccuPOS) The system would receive data inputted by either the customer sitting at the restaurant tables or inputted by the wait staff. Food orders, menu prices, sale completion, customer attendee numbers, restaurant location, menu items are some of the main elements that would pass through the POS and captured by the network system. The information from the POS system would give instant data to include total sales per restaurant, regional sales, supply depletion, food items sold, wait staff sales, and overall daily and monthly revenue figures. With the new system installed, up and running, HB management could view the overall picture and gains delivered by the point of sale system. Work flow information, sales information, supply information, system issues, transaction data are some of the many items that become known for HB company affording them to make concise decisions on improving restaurant service and quality, accessing inventory and product management (Fairbanks, 2017).

A sense of "are we improving our guests’' visits" would be experienced, driven by an increase in attendance and revenue. HB decision makers asked me to identify potential concerns from implementing a point of sale system. First is security. HB's POS system will run on a wireless system. Each terminal has an IP address and a connection to the network. Any wireless or LAN network is vulnerable to intrusion (Leesbro, 2017). Installing firewalls and anti-malware software will be necessary to aid in security platforms. The primary concern here is credit card breach. The system would need routine maintenance as well as daily security checks. Secondly, should the POS go down, a fallback plan is needed, ready, and rehearsed which consists of simply going back to wait staff taking orders by pen and pad, delivering them to the chefs, and completing monetary transactions with a cash register. Conclusion HB rolled out the new POS system to each of its twenty restaurants successfully. Development, analysis, testing, and operating the POS system ran without a hitch. After one year of using the point of sale system, revenue has increased by 18%. A practical POS system was delivered and effectively made the HB brand a local and regional favorite!
