Molar Mass: Defining and Calculating the Mass of Elements and Compounds, Study notes of Chemistry

The concept of molar mass, providing definitions and steps to calculate the molar mass of elements and compounds. It includes examples of molar mass calculations for sodium (Na), chlorine (Cl), water (H2O), and aluminum nitrate (Al(NO3)3).

What you will learn

  • What is the molar mass of aluminum nitrate (Al(NO3)3)?
  • How do you calculate the molar mass of a compound?
  • What is the molar mass of an element, and how is it measured?

MOLAR MASS

DEFINING MOLAR MASS

 THE MASS OF 1 MOLE OF ANY SUBSTANCE

 THE MASS OF 6.022 X 10^23 PARTICLES

 Measured in units of “grams per mole” or g/mol

MOLAR MASS OF COMPOUND

WHAT IS THE MOLAR MASS OF H 2 O?

the FIRST step is the look up the molar mass of individual elements on the periodic table. The SECOND step is to multiple number of elements (subscript) times atomic mass The THIRD step is to add up all elements. molar mass = (atomic mass H)(subscript) + (atomic mass O)(subscript) molar mass = (1.008)(2) + (15.999)(1) = 18.015 g/mol

MOLAR MASS OF COMPOUND (cont).

What is the molar mass of aluminum nitrate, Al(NO 3 ) 3? When the chemical formula contains parenthesis, distribute the subscript to all atoms within parenthesis. Al(NO 3 ) 3 = AlN 3 O 9 Al = 26.982 (1) N = 14.007 (3) O= 15.999 (9) Molar mass Al(NO 3 ) 3 = 26.982 (1) + 14.007 (3) +15.999 (9) = 212.994 g/mol
